Open data and libre/open source apps

[edit]

Is there info about whether it's the case or not? It seems that "Open" is only in the name. Tuxayo (talk) 17:24, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

As they seem to have similarities. Tuxayo (talk) 17:26, 2 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is no connection, OpenCellID is a public open database under a free license; OpenSignal is a private company and does not publish any data, nor anything else "open". It's just a name. 2A01:598:90A3:82EA:484A:616E:41F1:A7A0 (talk) 18:35, 13 May 2019 (UTC)--[reply]

Opensignal page needs more recent information, suggestions.....

[edit]

The entry for Opensignal is quite out of date, suggestions below @Mean as custard:

Funding history does not mention the most recent round in 2018 [1] There was also another investment event in late 2018 where Frog Capital invested [2]

The current "Products and services" section is almost entirely old historic information

1/ Almost all citations over five years old (super long for a startup!)

2/ These apps have all been discontinued: Wifimapper, Crisissignal, Weathermapper. There are only two current apps: Opensignal and Meteor, see the list of Opensignal apps on Google Play (ie just two apps)[3] The Meteor and Opensignal apps are also available on the Apple App Store for the iPhone [4].

3/ Suggest renaming the products and services section as "History"

4/ Suggest adding a new Products & Services section listing the two consumer apps, and making the point that Opensignal's clients are mobile operators using mobile analytics data to understand the mobile network experience of their customers and of their competitors [5]

Other suggested history items

1/ 2018 and 2019 published analysis of the impact of natural disasters on mobile experience eg Sulawesi earthquake impact [6] Hurrican Florence impact [7] Cyclone Fani impact [8]

2/ In 2020 Opensignal tracked the impact of COVID on mobile [9]

3. Opensignal has published multiple analysis of real-world 5G [10] [11]

On current products and services:

1/ Opensignal has added a range of new metrics on video, mobile gaming and voice, see: Video Experience (launched 2018) [12] Voice App Experience (launched 2019) [13] Games Experience (launched 2020) [14]

2/ Also, under current products&services is it worth mentioning that Opensignal publishes reports on c50 countries, each every six months, comparing the experience across different operators? See the Market Analysis section where there are many free reports and insights on topics such as spectrum, rural, smartphone, gaming, mobile video, 5G, COVID etc [15]
