Council of State

[edit]

Regarding the Council of State:

This 1999 newspaper article by Justine McCarthy states:

20 Council members took their places at the 72-year-old cabinet table brought to Aras an Uachtarain by Eamon de Valera in 1961 ... At the meeting proper, the members are seated according to their rank under the Constitution, placing the Taoiseach on the President's right, at the top of the table, and her seven nominees at the opposite end.

The phrasing "their rank under the Constitution" does not instil confidence in the reliability of the source, but it would be worth investigating if there is any truth underlying it. I found pictures of the first (1940) and latest (2015) meetings; the latter suggests the order of precedence, if it ever existed, has been abandoned, along with the 72-year-old cabinet table.
