Name[edit]

Was it Orkney and Shetland or Orkney and Zetland, or were Zetland and Shetland interchangeable? I was under the impression that Zetland was the preferred official term.

The name is Shetland. The zed was a printer's substitute for the yogh in the Middle-Scots spelling Ȝetland. The Dictionary of the Scots Language says that actually pronouncing the name as "Zetland" started in the early 19th century as a social affectation.
