Reference for dis-affiliation from Hostelling International Canada

[edit]

I received a letter but I can't find anything published on the web to reflect the dis-affiliation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somebun (talkcontribs) 16:48, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article problems

[edit]

In my opinion, the use of terms and expressions like "rumoured" and "it has been speculated" and it is "reported", are not acceptable in a fact based source like an encyclopedia; unless something can be stated in a definitive way, with a reliable reference to support the claim being made, it should not be included in Wikipedia. Supporting claims like these with references from the hostel's own website would not be considered reliable, sourcing claims utilizing eight year old travel "puff" pieces are even 'pushing it', in my opinion. Are there no locally published history books available that would add historical depth to these statements and in any way independently support the claims of "haunting"? In my opinion, the way the current version of the article presents this type of material, it appears very promotional in tone. It may provide an air of mystery, in the hope of encouraging customers so inclined to stay at the hostel, but it doesn't appear very "neutral" or encyclopedic to me. The material concerning the hanging and subsequent "secret" burial of Whelan is referenced to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online, however on looking at the source itself, apart from supporting that 5,000 people attended the execution, the remainder of the details provided in the article in this regard are unsupported by that reference. External links to independent businesses that utilize the hostel for their own tours are promotional in nature and are regarded as spam. I'm going to add an appropriate template and a few citation requests in the hopes of clearing some of this up. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 16:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
