Merging "Ottoman Clothing" with "Costumes of the Ottoman Empire"

[edit]

I am opposed to merging the two articles. However, both articles are pretty inadequate, despite the length of the second.

There's an enormous amount of information on clothing of the Ottoman court from the 15th through 19th centuries. I'll be adding some. And perhaps "Ottoman Clothing" should be renamed to reflect its concern with courtly dress. There may be problems with photographs of garments, since i expect the photographers or the publishers hold copyright, although the garments themselves are over 100 years old.

"Costumes of the Ottoman Empire" is illustrated entirely with 19th century art, which is often included in a section about much earlier periods, and that can be misleading to those not familiar with historical clothing.

Second, the word "costumes" now has certain connotations in English, so i'd suggest changing it to "clothing".

Third, i think this section might best be confined to clothing outside the palace, which it mostly is currently. There were many ethnic and cultural groups within the Empire. Some groups never adopted Ottoman garments. Some developed highly influenced clothing. The current illustrations don't make this particularly clear, coming for the most part from a single source. Yet there is art even from the 16th century showing these - Nicholas de Nicolay, for example. I'll be expanding the illustrations, but my current illustrations are quite small. Still i think they may be adequate, at least as a start.

To sum up, i think the "Ottoman Clothing" needs to be both expanded in content and confined to the garments of royalty. And i think "Costumes of the Ottoman Empire" needs renaming, a great deal of editing, and more art from time periods other than the 19th century.

Ottoman clothingClothing of the Ottoman Empire — This seems to be how most articles about an aspect of a country are named.--D O N D E groovily Talk to me 06:18, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
