The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Tas-Sliema, Malta is a Parish since 1918. This Church was built in 1877-1881 on the initiative of Rev. Fr. Paul Vella D.D. In November 1881 was handed over to the maltese Province of Friars Minor, whose Superior was Rev Anton M. Cesal O.F.M. During the years it had to be enlarged due to the increase of the population. It is built in a Roman-Ionic style and decorated with sculpture gilded with gold. The dome, internally decorated with paintings of Franciscan Saints. While the caeling depicts seven episodes from the life of the blessed virgin Mary. We find also 5 altar paintings by the famous maltese artist Giuseppe Cali' all made in 1882. Here is his famous masterpiece representing St. Gerome. The statue of Our Lady of the Sacred heart was manufactured by the local artist, Girolamo Darmanin,in 1879 and brought in the church the same day, 26 th June 1881, when the church was blessed and opened for the faithful. During the last World War, the church, was heavily damged together with the total loss of the Friary. A Franciscan father died under the debris of the Convent. The devotion of Our Lady, under this title, spread rapidly throughout the island. A Perpetual Novena is held every Wednesday in honour of the Blessed Virgin. The feast is celebrated on first Sunday of July with liturgical services, procession throughout the decorated streets, with great outdoor festivities and fireworks.
