The name Outer Skerries is actually wrong, the Out is not short for Outer it is actually derived from the old norse Ut which means East. The Ve in Ve Skerries is deriverd from the old norse for west. The Ve Skerries, are (unsurprisingly), off the west coast of mainland Shetland. The term The Skerries is a term which is used, but is also slightly incorrect. The correct term is just Skerries. This mistake is also made when naming Shetland as a whole and the nearby Orkney. These are very often called The Shetlands and The Orkneys, but no locals would use these terms.

This seems to be correct and I have made amendments. --JBellis 17:47, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is this right? The Norse for "east" is Austr not ut, if I mind rightly. Either the English is a corruption of this, or someone is confusing two Norse words. Both etymologies work, for slightly different reasons. --MacRusgail (talk) 15:25, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have always believed this to be the case because it is often quoted locally in e.g. tourist literature as the etymology of the name. See for example visitshetland.com. However I note that "utan" in Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish means "outside" or "without", so I am starting to have doubts! --Deskford (talk) 09:28, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both/and rather than either/or. Dey (1991) says it derives from austr = "east" or utsker = "outer". Ben MacDui 07:34, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WWII

[edit]

Article could do with more on the role of the islands in WWII, considering how close they were to Norway and German occupied territory. (The closest British territory I think - with the exception of the Channel Islands and parts of Southern England)--MacRusgail (talk) 15:25, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
