New Caledonia’s referendum in 2018 was about independence

[edit]

I'm not sure why it says on here that “the people of New Caledonia voted against becoming an overseas country” when it was about whether or not New Caledonia became independent of the French Republic. -- sion8 talk page 07:58, 7 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pays

[edit]

It's not that pays can be translated "land"—it should be. The court has ruled that this is not an autonomous sovereignty and we shouldn't be using vocabulary that imply it is. Even the few nations that are called pays by the French get the English -land in their names.

OCF might be the WP:ENGLISH WP:COMMONNAME (although if you've lost the CIA worldbook, it bears googling), but we shouldn't be burying the correct translation, even if it's not currently being employed by the British media. — LlywelynII 22:50, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
