Paavo Running Camps[edit]

You can find his legend living on through the Paavo Running Camps. These were established in 1971 and are now found all over the country, pushing runners to the next level of train. They make this possible by providing a positive attitude and strong work ethic into high school runners. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.72.65.86 (talk) 22:51, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ten-mark bill[edit]

I'd find it notable enough to mention that his picture was on the 10 mark bill, until the bill was retired circa 1993. --88.112.176.223 17:07, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Phelps[edit]

The reference to Michael Phelps' gold medals (citation #11) is now outdated. Please fix it, Wikipedia Guru. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.200.3.1 (talk) 04:48, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not much impressed by the length but anyhow this is an overview:

  • Nurmi was born in Turku, Finland. - why is this in the "career" section?
  • Renamed header
  • The lead is pretty bad and need c/e. I'm unable to get a flow which is a must for Lead
  • The article needs throughout copyediting. The prose and selection of word is not up-to the GA standard.
  • Fix it!
  • Replaced ref
  • It is not required
  • Refs needed:
  1. An annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon has been held every August in Iron County, Wisconsin, United States, since 1969, the oldest marathon in Wisconsin. Another marathon bearing the name has been held in Nurmi's hometown of Turku since 1991. Finlandia University, an American college with Finnish roots, named their athletic center after Nurmi.
  • How should I reference it? They were simply named after him. The marathon has an article here, the buildings can be found via Google
  1. A stadium in Turku was named the Paavo Nurmi Stadion in 1997. Nurmi is mentioned in The Simpsons episode, "Goo Goo Gai Pan", where Mr. Burns defends the strength of his antique motorcar by declaring, "Did you know that this car once outraced the Flying Finn, Paavo Nurmi?" The most famous Hungarian steam locomotive, the 424, had one of its nicknames after him because of its speed
  • Same situation.
  1. Nurmi's record of twelve track and field Olympic medals stands to this day. He ties Larisa Latynina, Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis (the ref is dead)
  • Replaced
  1. At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Nurmi won the 10,000 m narrowly ahead of countryman Ville Ritola and finished a close second in 5,000 m, losing the gold to Ritola.
  • This is cited
  1. Nurmi intended to end his career in the 10,000 m and marathon events at the 1932 Summer Olympics, but he was branded a professional before the Games and barred from running in Los Angeles
  • This is cited
  1. However, Nurmi did travel to Los Angeles and kept training at the Olympic Village. Despite pleas from all the entrants of the marathon, Nurmi was not allowed to compete at the Games. Although he had suffered from injuries, he claimed he would have won the marathon by five minutes after the event was over.
  • This is cited
  1. A Finnish national hero, Paavo Nurmi was the lighter of the Olympic Flame at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.
  • we have an article about the litter
  1. n his final years, starting around 1967, when he allowed the Finnish President Urho Kekkonen (a personal friend and sports enthusiast) to interview him for his 70th birthday over the Finnish Public Radio YLE, Nurmi gave more newspaper and magazine interviews
  • This is cited

That is it. I'll give the additional review once the above issues are addressed. This was a premature nom and I suggest to withdraw it as it is not even near to GA. TheSpecialUser TSU 16:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I will begin tomorrow. Regards.--Kürbis () 16:16, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Responded. Thanks for your review so far. I really don't think it should be withdrawn. Regards.--Kürbis () 09:34, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are some rather glaring omissions that will need to be fixed. I didn't have time to add anything about the following in my edit earlier: Nurmi's training methods, his career as a student, and as a coach (to at least Taisto Mäki). I'll try to work on these tomorrow. Prolog (talk) 16:40, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your work. If you want I can include a "style" section? Regards.--Kürbis () 19:55, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think there's plenty that can be added about Nurmi's style in regards to running, training, private life, et cetera. So, go for it. Thanks, Prolog (talk) 22:52, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • What's the status on this review? Been nearly a month (based on the edit history work has definitely been done on the article since). Wizardman Operation Big Bear 15:47, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think I have addressed all the concerns now:
  • Article rewritten and expanded
  • All images alt-texted (referred to captions)
  • All requested citations provided
Thanks for your patience. Prolog (talk) 10:05, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Work done by Prolog was exceptional! The article has been expanded to 4x which looks easy but it had gone from 9K to 36K prose which is amazing expansion. I've been keeping a keen watch over the addition and I don't find issues which can possible fail this. I've just made few adjustments as previously there was large empty space which was looking awkward. I believe that this is a Good article thus have passed it. Keep up the good work. TheSpecialUser TSU 12:59, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your review(s) and for the adjustments you made. I made a minor tweak to one change in an effort to stay closer to the corresponding Finnish-language source. Prolog (talk) 17:43, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vegetarianism[edit]

Nurmi was not a vegetarian his whole life (only from ages 15 to 21). It is a common myth and he refuted it in -32. http://www.hs.fi/urheilu/Paavo+Nurmi+HSssä+vuonna+1932+Olen+maistanut+alkoholia+morfiinia+ja+ooppiumia/a1305605579286 Not famous (talk) 06:34, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
