Name "Palais de Tokyo"
[edit]Could somebody put in a section explaining how and when the name changed from Palais des Musées d'art moderne to Palais de Tokyo? For instance, why Tokyo, of all things? Lockesdonkey (talk) 18:22, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Tokyo after the avenue de Tokio (Tokyo Avenue) on which it is located. The name palais des Musées d'art moderne was rather functional and descriptive, as it was built to house the "City and State museums of modern art", i.e. the City of Paris Museum of Modern Art, still in the East wing, and the National Museum of Modern Art, transfered to the George Pompidou National Centre of Arts and Culture in the 1970s. 62.244.90.76 (talk) 14:56, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
- To be clear: it is named after Tokyo, the city. As above commenter states, the name derives from the street "Avenue de Tokio"... which in 1945 was renamed "Avenue de New York", leaving little doubt whose namesake the avenue (and therefore musuem) comes from. Proof of the renaming can be found in the english wikipedia article "Timeline_of_Paris" (look under 1935, not 1945, as they include it in a mention of construction on the Palais).. However the French wikipedia contains an entire article on the history of Avenue de Tokio, stating clearly "In 1918, the wharf Debilly is renamed Avenue of Tokyo, the name of the capital of Japan including Tokyo spelling was the norm earlier in the century." (translation by google). To read this article for yourself search "Avenue_de_New-York" in fr.wikipedia.org. I wonder why this Palais de Tokyo article does not make these facts clear, but it is not my place to edit the article, so i will leave this information here for the responsible party to edit, thank you. 72.190.127.141 (talk) 18:02, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
