I removed a few external links from the external links section today. This page is often visited by editors looking to add an external link to advertise their product and/or website. The links I removed should not appear on the page given my interpretation of WP:EL. User Guy Macon reverted one external link and invited a discussion (so here I am).

The link that was reapplied to the page links to a texas instruments website where a product can be purchased. While I admit that I know very little about this subject, I don't see what purpose it serves other than to advertise a purchasable product sold by Texas Instruments. Is there a reason it should be kept? OlYellerTalktome 19:37, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for discussing this. The external link to the TI OMAP4430 has been in this article since the day it was created (15 October 2010), so the presumption is that the past consensus was to retain it. That doesn't mean the past consensus was right, of course, and so I am completely open to arguments that it should be removed.
The PandaBoard is a board that contains multiple chips, the most important of which is the OMAP4430. Such chips are not sold to consumers, but rather to manufacturers of boards like the PandaBoard. In the case of the OMAP4430, the page linked to contains this disclaimer: "This product is intended for high-volume wireless OEMs (Original equipment manufacturers) and ODMs (Original design manufacturers) and is not available through distributors. If your company meets this description, please contact your TI sales office."
If you go to the linked site, click on "TI eStore" and search on "OMAP4430" you will find that TI does not directly sell the OMAP4430 or any other integrated circuits (commonly known as "chips"). The TI site sells things like Development Boards, Daughter Cards, Starter Kits and evaluation Evaluation Modules - boards designed to help an engineer who wants to use a TI chip in his design. The listed prices are for hobbyists and students; typically an engineer working for a manufacturer gets the board (and samples of chips) for free. The point of the site is not to directly sell anything, but rather to support engineers.
This external link clearly meets the criteria of WP:ELYES: "Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject and cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to. amount of detail." The chip that is at the core of a Pandaboard is certainly relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject, and there is far too much detail (much of it copyrighted) to include directly into the article. I don't see any part of WP:ELNO or WP:ELMAYBE that applies. PandaBoard should have a link to the OMAP4430 for the same reasons that BeagleBoard has a link to the TI TMS320. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:21, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I read this a few days ago on my phone and forgot to reply. My knowledge of the subject definitely made making this decision impossible. You obviously know what you're talking about and understand the pertinent WP policies as well. Do you have this page on your watch page? I'd feel much better about the future of the external links section of this article if so. I don't think I'm capable of keeping it clean. OlYellerTalktome 13:18, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I watch this page. A partial list of other pages I watch is: 3D printing, Aircraft warning lights, Arduino, Austin transformer, Ben NanoNote, DipTrace, Fallback font, Floating point, HP 35s, Homopolar motor, Interrupts in 65xx processors, List of 7400 series integrated circuits, List of Arduino compatibles, List of Unicode characters, Milkymist, PandaBoard, Pandora (console), Parallax Propeller, Qi hardware, Raspberry Pi, RepRap Project and Slackware. As you can see, I concentrate on engineering / technical topics where a non-technical editor might not notice that an edit is technically flawed. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:50, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics notes..

[edit]

fwiw, hardfloat versions of pvr gfx blobs have been available for quite some time, at least for 6months or more. And 1080p video decode, and 1080p screen resolution, and rendering 1080p content on 1080p are quite possible. I'm not really sure who proved otherwise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.118.179.97 (talk) 22:05, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Source please? I'd love to have proper graphics drivers. Thanks... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.127.23 (talk) 23:56, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
