Paris Opera Ballet vs Paris Opera National Ballet vs Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris vs Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris[edit]

In French newspaper articles journalists writing reviews about performances usually refer to the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Ballet), official announcements refer to the Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris (Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris). There is only one opera in Paris presenting performances in two opera houses (Opéra Bastille, Palais Garnier) and there is only one Paris Opera Ballet. Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris → Paris Opera Ballet – This is the common English name for this ballet company. For example, it has been used by both The New York Times and The Times of London. A search of English-language books at Google Books for "Paris Opera Ballet" gave about 8,970 hits, while "Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris" gave about 79 hits. I found some additional evidence supporting Paris Opera Ballet for the article title. It has been used as the name on the company's English-language website: see "The Ballet" and "Paris Opera Ballet | World Creation: L'Anatomie de la Sensation". In addition, it is the name of the article about the company in The International Encyclopedia of Dance (Selma Jeanne Cohen, editor, Oxford University Press, 2004, ISBN 9780195173697). The first sentence in that article reads: "PARIS OPERA BALLET. Many of the leading European and international ballet companies owe their origin, directly or indirectly, to the fame and influence of the world's oldest ballet company, that of the Paris Opera." --Robert.Allen (talk) 19:02, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There have been so few comments from other editors concerning this requested move that I am adding notices to the talk pages of the affected projects. Support The title is in any case incorrect as "national" should not be capitalised according to French rules. The bolded text in the article is correct, please retain it as alternative title when making the move. Regarding the capitalization of the alternative French name of the company, this is a bit inconsistent in various English-language sources (not to mention French-language sources, which, however, can be disregarded when reliable English sources exist). We have typically used The New Grove Dictionary of Opera as a guide for the capitalization of titles of operas. I would suggest we do the same for French names of opera companies. That source capitalizes adjectives such as "National", for example it gives "Académie Royale de Musique" for the name during the periods of monarchy, "Académie Impériale de Musique" for the name during the empire, and "Théâtre National de l'Opéra" for the name of the company after 1870. --Robert.Allen (talk) 18:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is an interesting question! For this article we agree that we should routinely refer to the English name. In parentheses in the lead, it is normal on Wikipedia to state the correct version of a name in the original language as well as a transliteration if necessary or any significant variants. Thus I think the small "n" is correct as in the original French and I would regard the variant with capital "N" as not significant.
In the case of Ballets Russes we routinely use the anglicised French name. In that case the alternative English translation is given and the original French spelling fr:Ballets russes has clearly been regarded as not worth a separate mention, with which I concur.
For a name with no established English usage, the practice is to follow the original (for example with diacritics and other letter variations), or a standard transliteration of a foreign script such as Arabic of course, with alternatives as necessary. --Mirokado (talk) 00:17, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique[edit]

Where does the title of the assembly, Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique, fit in? It is used as an entry for the On This Day, of June 28th, 2017 Main Page post for the article on the play Giselle, and it is used again in the article Giselle, but it is never used in the article of the theatre itself, Paris Opera Ballet. It is also a redirect to that article, but omitted from reference within the article. Is this an oversight? Stevenmitchell (talk) 22:07, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
