The Park Tunnel Nottingham

[edit]

The park tunnel is constructed in two sections divided by the open section and stairs up to College Street. The section closest to Derby road is lined with bricks laid on the skew very much like the construction of many railway tunnels in the Nottingham area. The tunnel arch springing is located above the sandstone rock, so only the arch is constructed from brick, this is comparable to the former disused tunnels of the Great Central Railway connecting to the former Nottingham Victoria Station. On a visit to the park tunnel late last year on close inspection the brick arching to the section of tunnel in question was constructed with perforated bricks which have deteriorated in places and the perforations can be clearly seen. There was only one man responsible for patented hollow bricks at this time: Robert Beart. In 1852 Edward Gripper set up a ground breaking steam powered brick manufacturing business situated at Mapperley on the north east of Woodborough Road, Nottingham. He his documented to have been using Robert Beart's Patented brick making system in his early years in Nottingham, so the brick lining must have been manufactured by him and approved by T C. Hine the architect in charge of the project. The Engineers and Contractors (talk) 11:26, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
