Where does the name "Pasifika" come from? this site blandly states "the terms “Pasifika” and “Pasifika peoples” are umbrella terms that are unique to Aotearoa, and were coined by government agencies to describe both migrants from the Pacific regions and their descendants", but doesn't explain the origin. I presume it's the Maori rendering of the English word "Pacific"? Jpatokal (talk) 01:20, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jpatokal: That seems likely - the first references to Pasifika I can see are from Maaori language texts from 1977, around about the time Pacifica, a social organisation for Pacific women started gaining interest from the press. The website might claim it was a term made up by the government, but to me based on what primary sources I can find, it seems like a term that came organically from the community, as a pan-Pacific identity started forming in NZ.
