History questions[edit]

When did this award become known as the Bear Bryant award? I assume it wasn't known as such when it began in 57, as Bryant still had his glory days ahead of him at that time. User:Havardj

You are correct to wonder. The award did not get its name until after Bryant died in 1983 of a hear attack. Although not entirely clear, the award may have simply been the National Coach of the Year Award.--Tlmclain | Talk 23:17, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite[edit]

I have substantially rewritten this article.

to clarify that the award was not named for Bryant until 1986
to clarify, with a reliable source, that Bryant did in fact win the prior award three times.
to remove inaccurate, unsourced material about multiple winners.

We still need some good material on the prior award, the National College Football Coah of the Year Ward. JodyB_talk 15:11, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
