Nationality and general concern[edit]

Unable at the moment to determine birthplace with any certainty, but was in England studying at the RAM by 1893 or earlier - may have been born in England or elsewhere in what is now Great Britain, of course; just I don't know is all. I'm not positive of our (or even the) definition of English composer and didn't want to include him in that category on such weak information, though I am guessing strongly that he was European anyway. Not an extensively studied composer (not saying he should be or is more than marginally significant - I like the one minor and one major work I've heard of his musical output but that's a tangential concern :), and any claim to significance might rest on his influence on two other more famous musicians' careers, which may I admit be a touch flimsy - I put that forward 'boldly' for all of that. The various awards won most likely don't cut it of course- though I am curious to learn a bit more about the MacFarren scholarship, have now learned a little though not whether it is named for G.A. or brother Walter... :) Might find more information anyway...) (Obviously, birthplace in London suburb Erith, or at least claim in contemporary accounts (confirmed, I think, in more recent genealogies of his family...) determined since the above comment. ) Schissel | Sound the Note! 20:27, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
