This article was posted on September 30, 2010, on an area of mathematics that is currently somewhat out of fashion, but is being increasingly applied to an active area of materials science. Being new, it is a rapidly changing field, and this article will be obsolete quickly if not maintained. Since this is an interdisciplinary subject -- closely related to a number of very active areas of mathematics -- the wider the range of contributing authors, the better.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT POINT. This field is not only new, but is adjacent to a number of areas, some of which neither I nor my collaborators may be aware of. For this reason, this article should be regarded as particularly tentative and in need of attention from as wide a variety of authors as possible. Please feel free to edit, adjust, modify, and especially add to this article as appropriate.
