Definition[edit]

Article needs to say what the committee is in the first line (and bold it). MP (talk) 17:01, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know more about the standard formatting of wikipedia articles. I have taken made the change as you recommended. I think it greatly improves the article. ZaydHammoudeh 22:33, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Islamic Supreme Court[edit]

S.A.,

a very interesting summary on this most important jurisprudencial institution within the Islamic world. Clearly these most highly qualified judges are making such excellent and purely motivated work in the name of our Lord, which can be witnessed on the webpage listed in the main article.

However, there seems to be a sense of imbalance as to the scope of application within the Muslim world of the fiqh and fatwa taken by the PC, as the judges all seem to be appointed by the currently reigning king of Saudi Arabia. A friendly reminder that Islamic fiqh is more than Salafi-Wahhabi judgement and interpretation could be in order here.

At the end of the day, Islam will indeed be in need of a kind of "Supreme Court" in which all Islamic madhhabs - the four Sunni (Hanafi, Shafií, Maliki Hanbali), the three Shi'ite (Zaidi, Ismaili and Twelvers) and even the remaining Ibadis (Kharijis) will have to be included, and the fatwas and other legal positions taken will have to be reconcilable within all madhhab.

If the Permanent Committee wants to establish themselves as the supreme instance for fiqh, fatwa, and other legal questions on Islam, they will have to decentralise and incorporate the remaining madhhabs within Islam.

"And if two parties of the believers quarrel, make peace between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully towards the other, fight that which acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah's command; then if it returns, make peace between them with justice and act equitably; surely Allah loves those who act equitably. " Qur'an 49:9

Name[edit]

I changed the name to "Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Issuing Fatwas" from "Permanent Committee" The Committee's name is also translated as "Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fataawa" (with 'fatwas' not being translated) or "Permanent Committee for Religious Research and Ifta" or "Standing Committee for Scholarly Research and Issuing Fatwas" Let me know if you think there is a better choice.
