Serbian painter born in Hungary. Never heard of him being refered to as Hungaro/Serbian painter. The place of birth is often irrelevant, why is it so hard for even profesional art historians to grasp this simple fact? There historically was the significant Serb minority population in Hungary, most of them have escaped there under Arsenije Čarnojević escaping the political prosecution from the Turks and the Albanians. One very notable name that was also born in Hungary, in Csongrad was the Serbian famous author Miloš Crnjanski. He spoke Hungarian but please don't tell him you consider him a Hungarian writer because of his birthplace. Petar Dobrovic was a Serb from Hungary, who painted in Hungary till the 1920s and then in what later became Yugoslavia. He acquired his arts education in Budapest, Paris and Belgrade, and was also a teacher at the Belgrade Academy of Fine Arts. His early works belong to Hungarian painting but he is also regarded as a leading artist of Serbian colorism. The reason it can be said that his early works are part of the Hungarian painting corpus is that he followed the trends of contemporary Hungarian painting. He was the founder of the Pecs Art Society (Pecsi Muveszkor) in 1920 where he was the instructor of several Hungarian painters. He was one of the most prominent members of the "Seven" (Hetek), a Hungarian painters' society. So the most precise determination would be "a Serb painter born in Hungary, a prominent contributor to Serbian and Hungarian painting). Of course Milos Crnjanski wasn't a Hungarian writer because he has nothing to do with the Hung. literary tradition, which is not the same case as Dobrovic's.
