The tail was a hollow tube, but since it was tied to the base of the kite, wind could not get into it, so it was never inflated. In fact, if it did inflate, it would not stream along the path the kite took, since it would have bulk and therefore structure.

Kites first came in blue, then yellow and red were introduced (all primary colours). I'm not sure if there was a green, but yellow and red definitely (I still have some of the plastic sheets they were made of, given to my father after some work he did for Peter Powell).

You're right - the great thing about the tail was it traced out the path that kite had taken. I can remember red, blue and yellow kites, but I don't ever remember seeing a green one. The plastic sheet was called the "sail", and better toyshops sold them separately because they often got torn in collisions with bushes and trees.
