In the text of the article, it is stated that Hendy's tenure at the National Gallery was marred by press criticism in 1947 of the radical cleaning policy practised by the Gallery's consultant restorer Helmut Ruhemann. This narrative is deficient on four counts.

First, the criticisms came not merely from the press, and not only in 1947, but from eminent art historians (notably Sir Ernst Gombrich), and were sustained over many years.

Second, the critics (rather than Hendy or Ruhemann) were vindicated by subsequent research. [1], [2]

Third, much of the cleaning was catastrophic, and has irretrievably ruined great paintings, some of which can now only be properly appreciated by way of photographs taken before cleaning.

Finally, as a consequence of the first three points, the text of the article conveys a false suggestion that Hendy and the Gallery were unjustly maligned by the press, and no more need be said. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I think it would be correct to rewrite the relevant part of the article on Hendy, stating that he presided over, and stoutly defended, a policy of radical cleaning (devised and practised by Ruhemann) which was held at the time to be misguided and has subsequently been discredited.
