I have always known he was a military paratrooper - in fact I watched him dive even in his 60s. But I have doubt about his enrollment in the foreign legion since he's a French national: it appears more reasonable to think he enrolled in the French Army. -- SERGIOaka the Black Cat 17:42, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The article states he was a paratrooper officer in the Algerian War. The legion's paratroopers were naturally very much involved in Algeria and their officers were, of course, French by birth or naturalisation so it is possible for both statements to be correct. Additionally French citizens have also served in the ranks of the legion. They used to have to use an assumed nationality (eg. declare that they were Belgian, Swiss or similar), but this is no longer the case (not sure when it changed). I had a quick look but couldn't find any sources online to back up his legion service, my usual era of interest is WWI or between the wars. Sorry I couldn't be of much help! - Dumelow (talk) 21:03, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
