Ratner, in her liner notes states that the quartet was performed by the composer after it was finished but gives no details beyond that, the details must exist.
Details of the discovery of the manuscript.
Details of the first performances in the 20th Century following resdiscovery.
A good detailed analysis of the movements.

As for the first point, Gramophone Magazine, October 2009 (page 83), states: "It is unclear whether this early Quartet was played in its composer's lifetime; by the time chamber music became more fashionable in French music-making (a trend Saint-Saëns helped pioneer) in the 1880s, it might have seemed too old-fashioned to programme." As for the second point, I have inserted information about the history of the manuscript until 1992. I hope this is of some assistance. This quartet was completely unknown to me until today.
