This text seems to have been copied from the last.fm website. That text is in turn based on the article on The Bach Cantates website, which in turn is based on an entry in the Oxford Composer Companion - J.S. Bach, edited by Malcolm Boyd (1999).

It also seems that Bach and Henrici knew each other socially as Henrici's wife Johanna Elisabeth was godmother to one of Bach's daughters.

Why "Picander"

[edit]

The article says [...] Henrici [...] writing under the pen name Picander, was a German poet and librettist . . . but where does "Picander" come from and what does it mean? What did it mean in Leipzig in the C18? "ander" looks Greek; is it possibly a portmanteau word? Perhaps I should post this in talk in de.wikipedia!
