Notable people[edit]

Please understand, this article is NOT the school's page on Wikipedia, it is Wikipedia's encyclopedia article on the school. There are strict requirements for who gets listed as a notable alumni and we we say about them here.

First, a person must either have a biography on Wikipedia or you must show with reliable sources that they would qualify to have one (what we call notable). The existence of an article about an event the person was involved in, or a group the person belonged to does not show notability for the person. Also, there must be a reliable source either in their bio or added here that shows their attendance at this school.

Second, we are specifically not a memorial. It is tragic that police officers sometimes get killed in the course of their jobs, but this is not the place to memorialize them.

Third, when you add a person to the notable alumni list all the you need add is this:

Their name, wikilinked to their bio
A few words indicating their primary notability (this would normally be found in the first or second sentence of their biography)
Their grad year, but only if it is referenced in their bio or you can specifically reference it here with a reliable source
You may add a brief bit about something that is directly involving the school and them, but only if you have a reliable independent source

There is no need to rewrite their bio here - that is what the wikilink is for. Specifically, we do not include their birthdate or their death date.

Fourth, write any copy you add anywhere in a manner that is understandable to an average reader, remembering that English Wikipedia serves the entire English speaking world. No one but an American cop, a cop fan or family of a cop will have any notion of what "EOW" means.

This article is in drastic need of improvement. It is missing most of what a school article should have. How about you work on that instead of trying to turn this into the school's memorial page? John from Idegon (talk) 19:22, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You keep removing Brian Moore who I have tried to add repeatedly, I linked him to a wikipedia page(Shooting of Brian Moore). I did not write that bio page and from what I could see, whoever did write it had to title it the way they did because there is another page for a different Brian Moore who is also happens to be a police officer. If Edward Byrne is allowed to be listed, why is Brian Moore not allowed?

I am not trying to make this page a memorial. Everyone that I have tried to add, and you keep removing, especially Brian Moore, are notable people to our community.

I am new to doing things on wikipedia, so excuse me for making some errors. There really was no need for you to be sarcastic in your last comments. Maybe if you had explained things in the beginning you wouldn't have had to keep deleting everything I added.

Plainedge71, thanks for registering. It makes communication much easier. To that end, I've left you some links to help you learn your way around here. It's not as easy as it seems.

An example would be the problem we are having here. When you see words in blue, they are links. Above, I linked the word "notability". I did that because it most likely means something different on Wikipedia than possibly what your real world definition may be. Notability on Wikipedia means "qualifies to have an article". Mr. Moore does not. His death, as an event, did (marginally) qualify for an article. The list you are adding his name on is for people who are notable, not for people who were part of notable events. The target audience for this and any Wikipedia article is the entire world, not your community. To be blunt, his fame in your community is irrelevant. He is not Wiki - notable because there is virtually nothing written about him anywhere excepting about his death. If he hadn't gotten killed, he'd have done his 20 years and collected his pension and no one would have ever heard of him. That certainly would have been better. What qualifies as notability has nothing to do with importance, bravery, utility and only marginally with fame. Notability comes from a subject having been written about in detail in multiple reliable sources. Details must include much more than just the circumstances of death. Is Plainedge High School's Vaping Problem Notable?[edit]

Obviously, this article is a stub, and needs something of note other than alumni. I was thinking that due to this school's massive problem with vaping that we could include it as a passing remark, if not an entirely new section.
