Merging the best-of-? playoff

[edit]

While I am usually a fan of merging pages that are stubs or short articles, sometimes a merger is not best. In this case I feel that by merging those articles (Best-of-three playoff, Best-of-five playoff, Best-of-seven playoff, Best-of-nine playoff) into the main Playoff article would make the playoff article far too big. I have an alternate solution. Why not merge the best-of- articles into one article separate from the playoff article? This would make more sense. Example names could be Playoff structure or Playoff format or playoff series format or playoff series stucture or many other possible names. These are just my thoughts. But I must be clear that I am against all those pages being merged into the main playoff article. Masterhatch 10:33, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is pretty cumbersome, with a lot of repeated information and self-reference. I think I like all the formats being on one page, but not in this one. It would be better to have a new page, linked from this one, called Playoff formats. It should begin with "SIngle game" and go from there, in my opinion.Mike Selinker 15:10, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. A user by the name of Tarret merged them a few days ago without discussing it first. Before he merged, there was a tag asking about merging and I was the only one that made a comment. I would be in total favour of separating out the best-of-? playoff parts. You like the title Playoff format and so do I. Would anyone object if I went a head and separated it all again? Masterhatch 15:23, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'd do it. Good luck with all the links to this page, though. There's a whole lot of them.Mike Selinker 23:56, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just separated out

[edit]

I have just separated out the "best-of-" from the main article and I got most of the links as well and created redirect pages. Masterhatch 14:51, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nicely done. I updated it some.--Mike Selinker
Thanks! and you did an even better job at updating it. Masterhatch 10:24, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Northern stadium"

[edit]

Playoffs in Major League Baseball --> Current playoff system

...lists Coors Field in Denver as a "Northern Stadium". I understand that the gist is to cite a locale where winter conditions could exist during a potential playoff game, but Denver is not in the Northern U.S. Its winter weather comes from being up in the mountains.

College? (NCAA)

[edit]

Should any mention of the NCAA playoffs be on this page? They are almost as high-profile as the professional leagues (one can argue that March Madness is much more popular than the NHL or MLS). This would also give room for the (lack of) playoff debate for div I football.

Playoff vs. Knock-out stage

[edit]

In the section on Football(soccer), it says that the world cup used to have a playoff in 1954 and 1958. While this may technically be true, it still has something similar, the knock-out stage played after round 1 (which is round-robin). It might be worthwhile to point this out along the lines of "while the knock-out stage is similar to a playoff, many football fans would not call it such" or something like that. Any consensus on this? Crix 20:27, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Crix, I agree with you. --GoOdCoNtEnT 20:29, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The word is used differently in football from the way it is used in American sports, a fact which the article should perhaps emphasise more than it does. International football playoffs were used in the 54 and 58 to decide who advanced to the next round between teams which were tied on points. In other words they were optional games. Modern day promotion and relegation playoffs as well as World cup qualifiers are more like the American version, where they are preplanned between teams who finish in a particular position in a league. The knockout stage of the world cup is no more a playoff (in the football sense) than the FA Cup or any other knockout competition. The knockout format was established a very long time before the first common use of this term in football, and to call the WC knockout tournament a playoff would seem anachronistic, foreign and odd to most football fans, I think it's safe to say. --Guinnog 20:59, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Football League

[edit]

Perhaps someone should add a CFL section?--J3wishVulcan 21:51, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MLS

[edit]

It really surprised me that MLS (Major League Soccer) was not mentioned in this article, maybe someone can include it here. Henryong 11:11, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good edit. I really think we are approaching a time when we should split this article off into (at least) two articles. What do others think? --Guinnog 11:14, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And then take bets on how long it will be before someone decides to merge them. :) Wahkeenah 11:20, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I say that any team that makes the playoffs and didn't when the division is a wildcard team which is not accurate in some league it could be the top 2 or more team in each divsion for example when it was the top 4 team in each division in the nhl the 2nd 3rd or 4th place teams where never called wildcard teams . A Wildcard is a spot opened to all team in the confrence or league . Ranul 01:21, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Playoffs

[edit]

Isn't this supposed to be in the plural form? --Howard the Duck 15:33, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Playoffs" is a term for a series of playoff matches in certain sports. Such an event may be notable in and of itself, but the main subject of this article is the playoff as a single entity. I've moved the page and fixed all the redirects. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This article should be named "playoff". Having it plural simply makes linking this article more difficult when using terms like "playoff system" or "playoff series". --TorsodogTalk 01:08, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

playoffs vs playdowns I have heard both terms used and i would like to know what is the differnce between the two Ranul (talk) 17:23, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Playoff or Play-off

[edit]

Should playoff be hyphenated as play-off, or not? There are 42-instances of play-off in the article, and 100+ instances of playoff, can we please be consistent? Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 06:33, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Both is possible and correct and used.--Je suis blocked by Darkwind 17:53, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
