No such thing as Plesioliopleurodon?
[edit]I ran across this page, thought the name sounded odd, and checked it out. I can't find any record of a Plesioliopleurodon having been described, or existing outside of mirrors of this page, but I do find that there is a Plesiopleurodon, also a Cretaceous pliosaurid, described in 1996, which is oddly missing from the List of plesiosaurs (until I go and add it). I suggest that Plesioliopleurodon is a typo for Plesiopleurodon; unless record exists of this name being used, it should be moved to Plesiopleurodon and the information about Walking with Dinosaurs removed, because I find no evidence of that either at the Australian mirror of the WWD site. You're right about it being a typo, I agree. The old site had a game that identified it as "Plesioliopleurodon", but neither the new site or the Australian one has the game anymore, so unfortunately there are no existing sources. But I saw it various times myself, it definitely identified the pliosaur. Dora Nichov 02:17, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- Do you have any kind of confirmation that these sites and games were created by the makers of the show? I thought tie-in sites like that were usually put together by contracted web developers. How can you be sure the names for the unidentified animals weren't just picked by some random programmer because htey sounded good and fit vaguely into the show's timeline? Especially since these sites no longer exist, I think citing them as any kind of credible source is a real problem. Dinoguy2 04:01, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
It came from the old official site. Dora Nichov 02:39, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
- Still doesn't indicate that the producers of WWD had anything to do with making the web sites. In fact getting simple facts like the name of the animals wrong (Plesioliopleurodon instead of Plesiopleurodon) is a pretty good indicator that whoever did make the official site was not overly familiar with the facts... To which family
[edit]The article puts Plesiopleurodon in the Polycotylidae, placed there by Ketchum HF, Benson RBJ. However it is listed, with a ?, under Pliosauridae. It is not listed as a polycotylid. So where does it belong (for now), in the Polycotulidae as here indicated, or in the Pliosauridae. J.H.McDonnell (talk) 12:37, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
- Polycotylidae is the current placement, you will notice that the taxonomic list at Pliosaur is now 10 year old and should be updated with references such as Ketchum & Benson 2010.-Kevmin § 13:48, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
P.S. How is the colored placard at the top relevant to this subject?
- It show what groups have members who are watching this page. --Kevmin § 13:48, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
