It is a Adder class[edit]

HI I think that it is not a Plunger class. Although USS Plunger was first one finished, The USS Adder has been laid down earlier - 3 October 1900. So if are my knowledges right, the class takes name from the first ship.

Hi. The Navy's Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships says that both A-1 and A-2 were of "cl. Plunger". Curiously, the page on Plunger says she was "cl. A-1".

I think it's usually a matter of being the first ship of a class to be authorized and assigned a number, not which is the first to begin or finish construction.

Ok that sound logical...I made mistake...unfortunately I have not a own version of this great book. If there is written - it should be a right.

It may be comforting to know that Friedman refers to them as Adders, as Adder was the first launched. This issue plagued the 1900-1925 Navy frequently, especially with battleships, as to which ship should be the name ship. I plan to mention this in the intro.
