Rename Suggestion!!!

[edit]

i suggest the page be moved to Pokemon: Black & White: Best Wishes! Anirudh Emani (talk) 11:57, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. You are just suggesting to move the article on 11:57 and you moved it several minutes later without reaching a consensus. Opening a rename suggestion tells us that you want to move the article but you are also seeking community agreement. In this case, nobody has responded yet but you moved the page with nobody telling yes.
As for the name, I again oppose it. As what the article says, it is the Japanese working title, and the English translation of Best Wishes so far. It is not equivalent to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sub-seasons like Sinnoh League Victors, that needs distinction from the original Diamond and Pearl series, mainly because Best Wishes is the first season of the Black and White series; and second, perhaps my greatest opposition reason is that the Japanese title says nothing about "Black and White", so it isn't agreeable that the show's name would contain Black and White. In any other means, the show is not currently airing, so if ever "Black and White" will be included on the title then we can easily move it to your suggested title.--JL 09 q?c 12:24, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - There was no "Red and Blue" season. There was no "Gold and Silver" season. There was no "Ruby and Sapphire" season. Just because Diamond and Pearl was in the name of it's seasons doesn't mean Black and White will. That is original research. Blake (Talk·Edits) 12:53, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ash

[edit]

It's almost certainly true, but are there any WP:RS that state that Ash will stay? --138.110.206.101 (talk) 03:02, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There have been leaks (such as the conceptual storyboard), but nothing that we can actually cite as of yet. I doubt it will be too long until the information is officially announced though; probably two or three weeks at the most, given how close the series is to debuting. Melicans (talk, contributions) 03:59, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ash will be in the anime. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CorocoroPokemon (talkcontribs) 21:17, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Iris"

[edit]

Where has it been stated that the female character named "アイリス" is named "Iris" in the English alphabet? The official website only uses the Japanese name. It is considered a violation of original research policies to assume that the name will be parsed into the English alphabet as "Iris". For all we know, it could just be the katakana reading of 愛麗子, 愛梨子, and 愛里酢, all of which are "Airisu".—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 02:33, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Ai" is a long "i" and "su" is "s". Hence, "Airisu" -> "Iris". The same usage (using "consonant + u" for "consonant" in foreign loanwords) is present in many other Pokémon and non-Pokémon examples.
And none of http://name-meanings.com, http://behindthename.com, http://meaning-of-names.com, http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com, etc. have any entries for "Airisu". Do you have any WP:RS that says that "Airisu" is a relatively common Japanese name? --70.134.48.188 (talk) 22:50, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just because "アイリス" can be read as the word iris does not always mean it does. There is nothing to support that the name a loanword at this point in time. As I said above, "Airisu" is a Japanese name. Just because it does not appear in any of the English websites you looked on, does not mean that Airisu (愛麗子), Airisu (愛梨子), and Airisu (愛里酢) are not valid names in Japanese. Unless you can provide an official statement from the Pokémon anime website, or any other official website affiliated with the airing of the "Best Wishes!" anime do not put "Iris" as the character's name on this article or any other article as doing so is original research.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:07, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any WP:RS which state that those are actual names? And those websites were ones which specifically had foreign names. Several even had an option to only view names from a specific language. And all of them had Japanese names. --70.134.48.188 (talk) 23:09, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This online dictionary features all three of those names. Type in "Airisu" in the Keyword box, then select "Japanese names (ENAMDICT)" from the drop down menu and then click "Search". In addition, the name "Iris" does come up if you select "Search using romanized Japanese" but that is because it is a katakana name, and those are listed first in this man's dictionary. Automatically assuming that these four katakana are meant to be read as "Iris" is most definitely WP:OR, even if you do know how the Japanese treat English words in katakana. And even though you've cited WT:MOS-JA#RfC_on_the_need_for_romaji_with_English_loanwords, that particular discussion is still ongoing and has no bearing on this because there is no way that you can be 100% sure that the name is in fact an English one because the names of the characters in the anime have always been parsed as katakana rather than as kanji. Ash's character in Japan has always been referred to as "サトシ" and never as one of the several hundred possible kanji variations. The same goes for Misty (カスミ), Brock (タケシ), Tracey (ケンジ), May (ハルカ), Max (マサト), and Dawn (ヒカリ). Just because the name of this character can be directly parsed into English does not mean it should be.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:22, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't OR to say that the name Iris is written in katakana as アイリス Airisu. --70.134.48.188 (talk) 23:30, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a reliable source to say that in this very instance, the katakana アイリス when referring to the fictional character to appear in the upcoming Pokémon anime subtitled "Best Wishes" are intended to be read as "Iris"? If you do not, then it is indeed WP:OR to say that those katakana are to be translated as "Iris" rather than directly parsed as "Airisu", an actual girl's name in Japan.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:33, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I searched for "Airisu" with "Search romanized Japanese" checked, and the first (i.e. most relevant) result was アイリス Iris. --70.134.48.188 (talk) 23:34, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I already stated that the hiragana and katakana names come first in his dictionary. If you look up any other name, the katakana spelling will be before all of the kanji spellings. "Iris" is not the most relevant result for "Airisu". This is a dictionary that you are looking through. Not a search engine.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 23:37, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have full-protected this page for 2 days. Folks, when you start discussing on the talk page, you stop edit warring on the article. –MuZemike 23:08, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I generally disagree, I think, with Ryulong on romanization issues, but I think he's right on this one. In the absence of an official transliteration, it could be considered original research to pick one particular transliteration over a more literal one. --Golbez (talk) 04:00, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that several new characters have been revealed with foreign (to Japan) names, I will finally agree that this character is "Iris", much like the new character ドン・ジョージ featured here would be called "Don George".—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 22:22, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Where are these names? I looked at the link, and there are only Japanese text. Google Translate shows them as "Iris" and "Dent", but it also calls that "Shotti" guy (or whatever his name is) "Shoe tee". So I wouldn't trust it. Blake (Talk·Edits) 22:49, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Best Wishes season is set in a fictional world where the characters have names that are not Japanese. Along with the characters in the video games with names like "Aloe", "Cheren", "Belyj", I think it's enough proof that the characters are "Iris", "Dent", "Shooty", and "Don George".—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 22:58, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Gym Leaders/Elite Four/Professors/whatnot were always named after plants. Considering how Iris is the 8th Gym Leader in White, and her Black counterpart is Shaga (Japanese name of Iris japonica), it would be safe to assume that her name is Iris... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.253.187.44 (talk) 15:48, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More romanization issues and Pokémon vs. Pocket Monsters debate

Pokémon: Best Wishes!Pocket Monsters Best Wishes — Following precedent with thirteenth movie article. "Pokémon" should not be in anime-related article titles until the subject of the article is dubbed into English. Tsutarja494, the Grass Snake Editor (talk | contribs) 18:53, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since there is no indication the English dub will use "Iris" or "Dent", romanizations should be excluded from the article until English names are confirmed. As for "Pokémon" and "Pocket Monsters", I moved it to "Pocket Monsters Best Wishes" and Ryulong reverted it due to me having not discussed this. As in the thirteenth movie article, the title should not include Pokémon until the series' dub title is confirmed.

I say move to "Pocket Monsters Best Wishes" with no colon, redirect the current title to there, and remove romanizations from the article to clear up the Dento vs. Dent and Airisu vs. Iris debates. Tsutarja494, the Grass Snake Editor (talk | contribs) 18:16, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose: First, this series/season is called "Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes!" in Japan. Second, there are not going to be any English names for these characters until mid next year. As of right now, it has come about that Isshu region is populated by people with non-Japanese names, so that means "Airisu" is "Iris", "Dento" is "Dent", "Shuutii" is "Shooty", and "Don Jooji" is "Don George".—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 17:54, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Ryulong. Also, consistent with the articles pertaining to each of the prior seasons/series, the primary purpose of this page is to list the episodes of the "Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes!" series, so if this page is to be renamed, a more appropriate title would be "List of Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! episodes". (That is, until the English dub is produced.) --SoCalSuperEagle (talk) 18:43, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. This is a small technicality, and the series is by far better known in English as Pokemon rather than Pocket Monsters, so there is little reason why the title should be so strictly translated. [tk] XANDERLIPTAK 14:22, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Formality

[edit]

I am posting this here because frankly 65.188.138.241 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is not listening and it'd be better to get a larger input on this.

Serebii's names for these characters and places need to be forbidden from use because they do not romanize or translate the names of items properly. "Dento", "Poddo", "Koon", and "Sanyou" should not be used on this or any other page because "Dento", "Poddo", "Koon", and "Sanyou" are merely the direct katakana to English alphabet romanization that Serebii uses and is not proper for writing about the content on Wikipedia (see WP:MOS-JA). If anything, "Koon" should be "Kōn", but that shouldn't be used as I will be describing in the next paragraph.

Secondly, as characters inIsshu sems to having more Englsh names than in the past, "Airisu", "Dento", "Poddo", "Koon", "Aroe", "Shuutii", etc., should be translated into "Iris", "Dent", "Pod", "Corn", "Aloe", "Shooty", etc., unless there is no Western version of that name (e.g. "Kamitsure", "Fūro", "Hachiku", "Shaga", "Gīma", etc.). At least until the dub is started, this should be how we treat the names of characters.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 19:52, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with both of your points. Melicans (talk, contributions) 22:45, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Some explanation

[edit]

Can we provide some explanation of things here mentioned? For example, the transformation of Hihidaruma to Daruma Mode is important for the summary of 667th episode, but there is no explanation provided for non-Pokemon readers what Daruma Mode is.--JL 09 q?c 18:16, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That will inevitably be covered when the Pokémon lists are completed.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 19:03, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Brief Summaries Request

[edit]

I have added a brief summary on the episode, and may randomly do so in the future (subject to permission from others). I do like to request that any episode summaries be kept brief rather than being overly detailed. However, I do encourage helping out in some of the edits if you feel that there is a minor error. Thanks! CHAK 001 06:41, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

What you wrote is not a summary of the episode. It is a description of what happens in the teaser. A summary covers all of the events of the episode. It does not pose a question of what will happen in the full episode.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 07:12, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cilan and airdates

[edit]

Serebii, Bulbagarden, Pokebeach, and random twats on YouTube who take the information from the previous three websites and turn it into videos with crappy background music are not reliable sources. Any information on the English names of characters and the airdates of episodes need to come from reliable sources. The fact that people have been hunting down uploads to Cartoon Network's server and discovered two images which I am not linking here does not mean that we can use that information on Wikipedia. Any information needs to be easily backed up, and pointing to a single image which for all we know could change in the next couple of weeks is not a reliable source. If Cartoon Network sets up the B&W website and has all of this information available to the general public, then we can use "Cilan" rather than "Dent" across Wikipedia. And random airdates stated in internal e-mails that random people in the fan community have access too are also not allowed. Wait for TV Guide to say when these episodes are airing.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 07:21, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Temporary Protection

[edit]

{{edit semi-protected}} Additional Reasons: The article log I have seen contained persistent reverting edits and possibly vandalism. This could be the work done mainly by IP users, which I did not see any citations or any given permission by editors who authorizes to edit this article as such. In the last two weeks that I read this article when I kept watch of this and related articles, I have suspected an increase in possible vandalism, which leaves me concerned. CHAK 001 (talk) 22:59, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not done The page isn't semiprotected which is what that template is meant for, and you can edit the page anyway. Go to WP:RFPP.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 00:41, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I will watch the article, but the template does exclude this talk page, however. It only affects the article itself. CHAK 001 (talk) 01:29, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
UPDATE: I will check the article again after the semi-protection is lifted, and if necessary, I will request an extension. CHAK 001 (talk) 04:56, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You do not understand. There was no reason for you to use {{edit semi-protected}} on this page because at the time the page was not semi-protected. You do not use that template to request that a page be semi-protected. You go to another page to do that.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 18:09, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

English Names

[edit]

I think that the names and places mentioned in the episode summaries should be changed to English. Meaning changing Satoshi to Ash, Dent to Cilan, Raimon City to Nimbasa City, ect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.127.163.168 (talk) 16:09, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

They are only to be changed to English if 1 of 2 criteria are met.
  1. The episode was aired in English.
  2. You are an affiliate or work for The Pokemon Company International and are able to obtain information about the episodes not released yet.
cyberpower (Talk to Me)(Contributions) 16:42, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No. That second criteria should not matter, because that is not a reliable source. The only time that the American dub names of any of the characters or locations should be used is after the episode has aired in the United States.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:37, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
