What is the origin of the name?[edit]

Characteristic

The Characteristics of the Poland China differ depending on which breed it is crossbred with. Chadwick & Smith (1973, p 325; as cited by Bray, 1968) note that:

“In comparison with other American breeds the Poland China has a lower growth rate and utilizes its feed less efficiently than either the Duroc or Yorkshire, but like the Hampshire it does have advantages in killing-out percentage, cross-sectional area of eye muscle and lean cut yield”

The lower growth rate means less overall meat yield as a result of poor feed utilization. Although, because of the breeds unique characteristics, the “killing-out percentage” (link) is high because of its lean cut yield. This is due to the fact that the Poland China is a lean pig with less fat than other breeds of Pig.
