Failed GA[edit]

I noticed this article's 18 November, 2006 nomination as a good article candidate and have taken some time to look it over.

My feedback is as follows:

The introduction needs to be rewritten according to the guidelines outlined at Wikipedia:Lead section. The introduction should serve as a summary of the entire article and not introduce facts that are not covered within the article itself.
The second paragraph (actually just one sentence long) reads: Pollepel Island is about 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City[4] and about 1,000 feet (300 m) from the Hudson's eastern shore.[2] It contains about 6.5 acres — most of it rock.[2]. This is confusing. Where is it? 1000 feet from Hudson Bay's eastern shore? 1000 feet from the Hudson River's eastern shore? How far is it from the river's western shore?
Make sure all measurements have conversions to metric as well.
This article would be greatly enhanced with the addition of a map without having to click on one of the external links at the bottom.
Who is Francis Bannerman VI?
Even though the references are in-line, the web site citations show show more information, including who the publisher of each link is.
Per Wikipedia's Manual of Style, avoid using words and phrases that indicate time periods relative to the current day. For example, recently might be terms that should be replaced with specific dates/times.
Don't wikilink years that appear on their own without specific dates, like 1908.
Why was the island named after the dutch word for a waffle ladle? What is the legend of Polly Pell?
Aren't most islands made of rock? This statement needs to be clearer. For example, if you are trying to say that the island is bare, exposed rock without any soil coverage, say so. What kind of rock is it made of? Is it volcanic in origin? Sedimentary?
The article contains weasel words. Example: It is also said that sailors making their first journey up the Hudson River were left stationed at the island until the ship returned as a rite of passage. Say who said it, and provide a reference.

I just modified a lot of the introductory text to make it less shifty. I removed a bunch of stuff that was folklore or otherwise unsourced. Interestingly, I removed the story about the ship being named "Pollepel" because I could find no source, but had to leave the clearly false (uh, to me) story about "Polly Pell" because that's what they tell on their website. pronunciation[edit]

Someone just responded to the request for pronunciation with pol-lay-ple. I converted to the likely IPA, but there is no indication of stress. Is it the 1st or 2nd syllable that is stressed? kwami (talk) 08:16, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That IP for that edit is in the Netherlands; I suspect the editor was indicating the Dutch pronunciation of pollepel rather than the pronunciation of people living near the island. --Cam (talk) 03:14, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map?[edit]

Does anyone have a map or can make a map to show where this island is? A USGS map of the quadrangle the island is in would be in public domain and could be uploaded with no copyright issues as it is a work of the US Federal Government.Camelbinky (talk) 07:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is one used in the plaque the trust installed near the island . If the source for that is available, the that could be used. possibly ? How about Nautical maps of the river? That would be very useful. I guess a nautical map would be public if it was done by the Coast Guard or some other Federal government agency. I had forgotten all about this article as I moved on to other Hudson River islands and communities in the Hudson Valley. I'm glad you found some maps! The subject of the article is an island. The preceding portion of the article describes the island owner Bannerman as a dealer of military surplus rather than an arms dealer. The term cartridge applies broadly to any containerized equipment; and military equipment is often containerized for portability and rapid availability in quantities required for typical usage. Military surplus includes uniforms, tents, and equipment for cooking, signalling, and transportation. Although the situation may have been different in Bannerman's era, few of today's readers will find ammunition in a military surplus store. Thewellman (talk) 03:01, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the nominal subject of the article is the island; the amount of space given to the castle, Bannerman’s business, and so forth strongly suggests it’s merely nominal. And this is the article on Bannerman, on Bannerman’s, on the Castle. But I’d suggest that anyone who doesn’t get what is meant by “cartridge” here probably is even more confused by “munitions”. What town is the island in?[edit]

I'm 99% sure Pollepel Island is in Fishkill (though many call the area Cold Spring or Beacon), it's just a few hundred feet from the Putnam County line.
