School location[edit]

The school's webpage [1] states that the Middle / Upper school is located in Bay Ridge, not Dyker Heights. We should go with what the school's official webpage states. However, if you believe that the school's location should be listed as Dyker Heights, please explain so on this talk page. —Brim 03:21, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I'd just taken that part from the Dyker Heights article, which says the school's within it. Either way, I'll change it.Xalfor 16:29, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Location?[edit]

Poly Prep sits on land that was formerly part of the Dyker golf course and trails. Year have gone by many people dont know that but the school border both areas. The school borders a not so wealthy sections of bayridge but does border the wealthy section of Dyker. Obviously they would like to associate the school with a more wealthy area, but the zip code may technically land them in Bay Ridge. The point is the school in right next to Dyker Golf course and right next to the military fort Fort Hamilton so I say the school is in Dyker since it was built on its golf course. I live in brooklyn my niece attended the school I attended Xaverian I know what i am talk about, screw what the sight says.

A Poly Grad votes for Bay Ridge[edit]

-It's in Bay Ridge.

I spent 8 years at Poly, 5th grade through graduation. The first line of the school song may be "Far down on the Heights called Dyker...", but that song was the only time ANYONE ever referred to "Dyker Heights" on campus.

It's really an anachronism to say that Poly's in Dyker Heights. It's like talking about "The City of Brooklyn". May have been true once, but it's doesn't seem to reflect the reality on the ground.

You say "Bay Ridge", lots of us think "Italian". "Dyker Heights" sounds snootier and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WASP">WASP</a>-ier which, being a prep school (and given the school's early history), is probably what some who prefer "Dyker Heights" are trying for.

But to me, the zip code says it all. It's in Bay Ridge.

As a current poly student, (Form III), the school is always referred to as in Bay Ridge. Dyker Heights is, as other people have said, just the administration trying to make it sound snootier.

What's the tune of the alma mater? It looks like it fits the rhythm of Far Above Cayuga's Waters. JDoorjam Talk 17:29, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IF YOU THINK POLY IS NOT IN DYKER HEIGHTS, I HATE YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE KILLING THE COMMUNITY. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.19.84.221 (talk) 15:27, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I believe there are some folks in this section that are insufficiently notable. Can we cut Cooper and Rothberg? Phripley (talk) 22:04, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location, Location, Location[edit]

Poly Prep is in Dyker Heights. Anyone disagreeing is clearly delusional or disregarding facts. Please remember facts do not cease to exist if they are ignored.

Poly Prep is in Dyker Heights (and not in Bay Ridge) for the following reasons:

1. 11228: This is the zip code of Poly Prep, which “coincidentally” is the SAME as Dyker Heights. This is probably the strongest argument. It is not Bay Ridge. In fact the next closest zip code is Fort Hamilton – 11209.

2. “Far down on The Heights called Dyker”: The school’s song mentions Dyker Heights directly and says nothing about Bay Ridge.

3. Dyker Meadow Land and Improvement Company: After 7th Avenue was constructed the DML+IC purchased the many blocks which now compose Poly’s lot. Sometime in the early 1900s the land was used by the Dyker Meadow Golf Course. None of these names mentioned Bay Ridge since the ridge is between 3rd Ave and Ridge Boulevard and not on 7th Ave. The name “Dyker Heights” also is derived from the Dyker Meadows that Dyker Heights over looks.

4. Fort Hamilton: If you loathe the fact that Poly Prep is in Dyker Heights and wish to incorrectly give it a new location, it is closer to Fort Hamilton than it is Bay Ridge. Cjz208 (talk) 20:46, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Written like a Prospectus- deleted[edit]

Wikipedia uses secondary sources- not primary sources with few exceptions. Self published works like the prospectus can be used to verify dates or spellings but little else. We write our articles in a factual encyclopedic way- not as advertising copy! Phrases like "Poly Prep offers an extensive vi..." is a give away. I have gone through and deleted most of the text written in that manner and unsupported by WP:RS. Please reinsert this when it has been rewritten. --ClemRutter (talk) 09:59, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
