wikipedia, stop lying[edit]

This is NOT the automatic title for former living popes. Wikipedia just made it up. It is the title for the current popeBamler2 (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have made some adjustments to the wording, though. Perhaps that addresses your objection? --j⚛e deckertalk 20:55, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do we need this article?[edit]

Wikipedia is not a dictionary, and I doubt that this article will ever amount to much more than the brief explanation that Benedict decided he would be referred to as Pope emeritus. That brief information can easily be incorporated into Pope Benedict XVI. If by some strange event we have another Pope emeritus, the article might have a little more substance. But as I see it right now, it is an article defining a term that is and for a long time probably will be populated by one man. Cresix (talk) 21:36, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's a big problem either way, but if we were to merge, I'd consider merging to Pope instead, much as bishop emeritus is covered at Bishop. *shrug* --j⚛e deckertalk 21:41, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On a strict question of WP:DICTIONARY, this article can be more than that, the sum of "how he is now addressed", apparel, what happened to the ring and stuff, is all non-lexicographic material. But I'm okay with a marge too, and Closeapple's suggestion works fine too. -j⚛e deckertalk 01:04, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point, although those details are specific to Benedict (since he is the only Pope emeritus) and don't really apply to the generic concept of Pope emeritus. If there were several Pope emeriti, there might be a need to discuss those issues in an article such as this, but for now I think that information more properly belongs in another article. Similarly, if a future Pope established norms for Pope emeriti's title, apparel, etc., then there might be a need to discuss whether it belongs in Pope or a separate article. But Benedict made those decisions only in reference to himself rather than future Pope emeriti. Cresix (talk) 01:31, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
*nods* I'll buy that. --j⚛e deckertalk 03:18, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Cresix. Since Benedict XVI will more than likely be the primary meaning for many years, it should be redirected there. Surtsicna (talk) 21:54, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm neutral on whether to merge/redirect, but if it happens, Papal resignation is probably a very close topic to redirect into. --Closeapple (talk) 23:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree, either redirect to Pope_Benedict_XVI#Pope_Emeritus or merge into Papal resignation as a new section on the title. --dab (𒁳) 09:23, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
