Accessibility problems with the tables[edit]

I've noticed this page has many results tables, generated via {{Football box collapsible}} (which invokes Module:Football box collapsible). Unfortunately, the colors used as background combine with the foregound text/link colors in an unhappily low-contrast way. We have guidance at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility/Colors which tells us how much minimal contrast we need to provide for the broadest group of readers. But the "Timbers" color used (#5D9731, a deep green) and the "Whitecaps" color used (#9EC4EB, a blue) don't contrast well with the textual colors.

A look at Snook's Colour Contrast Check can help us see how bad the problem is. The contrast of Timbers background with black (#000000), blue unvisited links (#0645AD) and violet visited links (#0B0080) gives us contrast ratios of 5.936, 2.41 and 4.477, respectively. For AA-level compliance (WCAG norms), the contrast should be 4.5:1; the blue links (the most-prevalent instance in these tables) are clearly deficient. We're even father away from AAA-level compliance (min 7:1).

With the Whitecaps background we're better off. Black, blue and violet texts give us contrast ratios of 11.549, 4.69 and 8.71, respectively. So here, again, the blue-on-blue links contrast the least, and not quite enough, but not so badly as against the green.

Can we use some other nearly-as-good colors to visually represent the game winners, which provide better contrast? It's unfortunate that Module:Football box collapsible provides no table captions and omits scope attributes (although, the way the tables are laid out, that'd make no sense), and also uses <small> and font-size:85% for no obvious reason. The colors themselves are of no use to visitors with screen readers, of course, but people trying to read these small and smaller texts may have big trouble.

Any thoughts? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 04:35, 5 September 2020 (UTC) Hi John, I just changed the color of the results to a more accessible green. I understand it will never be perfectly accessible but this is much better than before while keeping the spirit of the Timbers color. MarkRosewater (talk) 14:04, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
