Status of conscription[edit]

The article states that "Since 2003, the military service is optional." Does that mean that military service is now fully on a contract basis, or is there still a draft but with an "alternative service" option of some kind? Moonshiner 05:40, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In line with how the Portuguese Armed Forces call themselves in Portuguese, and how they translate that into English, I propose renaming this article "Portuguese Armed Forces". This would make the name of the article more descriptive too, rather than the current title "Military of Portugal" which was originally created only for the purpose of transcribing information from an American facts & figures source, the CIA World Fact Book. The "porting" of this fact book into Wikipedia is a subject of some contention as well.--jrleighton 05:50, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Can somebody please - de link the Portuguese Navy article- this redirects back to the Armed forces article - I wish to start work on a dedicated article

--- Regarding the conscription, citizens must report to the military registration office of their area of residence in January of the year when they complete eighteen years. They must present their I.D. and give their address. In May, they will receive notice of they day when they will have to attend the Day for National Defense (I think it translates like this). On that day, they will be transported to a military training camp, where they will assist a lecture about the importance of defending the country, and how the Armed Forces will support it's members in their studies and in their return to the civilian life. There is also a demonstration of how the Armed Forces work, and what equipment they use. By the end of the day, attendants will be given contacts for the enlistment offices for the various branches, if they want to enlist, and a document confirming of their attendance. Military registration is mandatory for male citizens only, and voluntary for females. All who are registered must attend the assigned Day of National Defense, or face heavy fines.

And the Military age is eighteen, not twenty.

Merging Army and Armed Forces[edit]

The Portuguese Armed Forces include three branches, Army, Navy and Air Force. Therefore no merging will be done between the Armed Forces article and the Army article. HKFlash

Marine Corps as a branch?[edit]

I dont see the Marine Corps is a branch of the Portuguese Armed Forces. It is part of the Navy, unlike in the United States. HKFlash

So true. I have removed it now from the table. Cheers, Get_It 22:38, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Armed Forces flag?[edit]

I dont see the current image used in the current Infobox as the flag of the portuguese Armed Forces. It is as far as I know used as flag/emblem BUT by the Army.

Marinha instead of Armada[edit]

I changed the term 'Armada' to 'Marinha', because that's the term used in the National Defense Ministry site (http://www.mdn.gov.pt), even though the head of the Navy is called "Chefe do Estado-Maior da Armada". The Navy's URL is also www.marinha.pt and not www.armada.pt Gazilion (talk) 09:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong! "Armada" is the right term. In fact, the Marines call themselves "Fuzileiros da Armada". Navy personnel carry shoulder insignia with the word "Armada". HKFlash 1:04, 1 June 2008 [UTC)

I think that both are right, but "Marinha" is a name for all Portuguese Navy itself, and "Armada" is a name of military component of the portuguese Navy. To the people who don't know, Portuguese Navy have a storng civil componente in areas like oceanography and other sciences, and military component and civilian component together are a Portuguese Navy, only a military component is "Armada" or "Marinha de Guerra" (Navy of War). Because in portuguese language "Marinha"(navy) can be concerning to a "Marinha Mercante"(merchant navy). Sorry if I am wrong, and excuse me about my poor English. Prepared for the what?[edit]

"Reforms on the military structure would then start to ensure it would meet the requirements for a possible Cold War conflict and later for the New World Order scenario."

I had to change the caption of the World War I photo[edit]

The photo is indeed from a Portuguese language history of World War I, but the soldiers are not Portuguese, nor are they equipped for 1918. They are French soldiers in the uniforms worn in 1914-15. I don't know if the caption is accurate as to the location being Belgium, but for what it's worth, the French army was in Belgium for only a short time in 1914 before being pushed out by the Germans, and then spent the rest of the war fighting in northern France. Structure origin vs Armed Forces origin[edit]

Instead of undoing my work, the user responsible for the contribution about the origin of MDN and EMGFA should come out and discuss the issue. I see no point in having the origin of the MDN/EMGFA in the History section. Please argument your option or I'll be forced to ask for moderator support. Actually, the History of the Portuguese Armed Forces only started in 1950[edit]

The Portuguese Armed Forces - as a single institution - only exist since 1950, when the roles of minister of Defense and chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces were created and the Portuguese Navy and Portuguese Army structures started to be integrated (the Portuguese Air Force would only be created in 1952). Before that, we can not speak about an organization called "Portuguese Armed Forces", as the Navy and the Army had completely separated structures. Even as a collective reference to the Navy and to the Army, the term "Portuguese Armed Forces" was rarely, if ever, used before the end of the World War II.

The article Military history of Portugal already exists for the general military history of Portugal, incluing the collective history of the Armed Forces, Army, Navy, Air Force and other military organizations of Portugal.

So in order to be precise and not duplicate the matters of the article Military history of Portugal, I propose that the History section of this article focus only on the history of the Portuguese Armed Forces from the time they were created as an integrated institution in 1950.

This does not invalidate the existence of a small initial introduction to summarize the previous histories of the Portuguese Army and Portuguese Navy until their integration as the Portuguese Armed Forces. This introduction should have the links to the history sections of the Portuguese Army and Portuguese Navy articles. Jsobral 11:50, 01 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm perfectly aware that the Armed Forces were born with the creation of the EMGFA. However I believe that the article Military history of Portugal does not cover properly how was the military organized, equipped and used. It is merely an article covering the wars and battles our military has faced throughout its history. Or maybe its just underdeveloped. I would rather wait for more opinions before starting to dismantle the History section that took so much effort to make. HKFlash (talk) 02:24, 02 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Manpower increase?[edit]

Currently the article says that the "Portuguese military forces number is 37,400 with the majority of the manpower allocated to the Army although its Chief of Staff, General José Ramalho, has already stated that more men are needed". That is confusing two issues. The majority of personnel in the army, and the need for more personnel. Royalcourtier (talk) 04:21, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That was something I added a long time ago when the Army Chief of Staff wished for an increase in manpower. No longer relevant today so I removed it. HKFlash (talk) 07:30, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
