Original Research?[edit]

I have added two OR tags.

The first is for the sentence beginning with "However, the gas giants are...". Would someone please provide references for this statement? Even if you don't have them at hand, could you please explain that statement below? Precisely when do the gas giants affect the center of mass? Do you mean the center of mass for the entire solar system or just the center of mass for the Sun and the gas giants alone? When did this happen last?

The second OR tag is the banner across the middle of the article. This is to remind me to see if any reference to 'primary' is valid outside the solar system. We are having a discussion here about that.

All planets continuously affect the center of mass. The image shows the position of the centre of mass compared to the sun with yearly dates.

I've downplayed all talk about extrasolar primaries in the article and removed the second OR tag.

One question. Are the barycenters on your diagram the centers of mass for various years of the entire solar system or just of the Sun-Jupiter system, considered independently? If the latter, we might say this in the caption. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 13:30, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've re-tagged. The article includes a single reference (in a notes section), which doesn't even describe what a primary is. I happen to believe the definition given in this article is also incorrect, but that's just my original research vs. the original editor's. Please find some reliable references before removing the tags. As it stands, the entire article is liable to be deleted or redirected. Lithopsian (talk) 20:07, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Solar System Barycenter diagram[edit]

While reviewing this article, I noticed that the diagram "Motion of Barycenter of solar system relative to the Sun" was a relatively poor quality gif file, the source URL was to a PhotoBucket account that is now disabled, and it was for the years 1945-1996. Therefore I created two new diagrams and uploaded them to Wikimedia for you: 1) File:Solar System Barycenter 1944-1997.png is a complete recreation of the diagram in the article with the same years and path to verify validity of my algorithms, and 2) File:Solar System Barycenter 2000-2050.png which is a more "current" diagram for the years 2000-2050. Feel free to use one or both of these public domain png files if you want to replace the older diagram.
