How Did She Die?[edit]

The article says that "a quiet end was put to her life at age 40". That seems to suggest that Ōku was quietly killed, which is a bit shocking, to say the least. The original writer doesn't seem, however, to be a native speaker of English, so perhaps all it means to say is, "She died peacefully at age forty." That's still pretty young, however, for a natural death. Somebody familiar with the case should clarify, and, if she was put to death, explain the circumstances.
