Taxonomy

[edit]

I don't have a recent, authoritative publication for the taxonomy of this family, but this source lists a very different taxonomy than what is shown on the page. – VisionHolder « talk » 14:17, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, the question becomes where is Taxonomicon getting its data? I see a reference to McKenna & Bell 1997 in the nomenclature section but there is no indication that this is the source for the tree. Is Taxonomicon considered a RS? --Kevmin § 18:14, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
True. I just wish someone would publish a new taxonomic guide like Walter Carl Hartwig's 2002 book The Fossil Primate Record. It's time for an update, given all the recent discoveries. – VisionHolder « talk » 18:44, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, McKenna and Bell (1997) actually list Proconsul in the tribe Pongini, along with the other genera Taxonomicon includes in Proconsulidae (Kamoyapithecus, Limnopithecus, Kalepithecus, and Platodontopithecus). Among the genera listed here, they list Rangwapithecus as a synonym of Dryopithecus (also Pongini), Mabokopithecus as a synonym of Ramapithecus (Pongini), Turkanapithecus as a basal member of Cercopithecoidea, and Nyanzapithecus as a member of Oreopithecinae.
