Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Tiffany mount be merged into prong setting. I think that the content in the Tiffany article can more easily be explained in the context of the prong setting page. In addition, much of the information in the body of the Tiffany page is about a lawsuit concerning whether "Tiffany setting" is a generic description for a prong setting, which makes the most sense discussed in context of the prong mount. As the lawsuit itself states, "Tiffany setting" is not permissible to be used as a generic description of prong setting engagement rings. While there is some such genericized use, a discussion of this requires distinguishing the Tiffany setting (a trademark) from other rings of similar design (which are "prong setting" rings), and thus is best suited for the prong setting page.

Aside from the lawsuit discussion, the only other information on the Tiffany page more accurately describes prong settings in general and is unsourced. There are not sufficient sources for the material on the page, either; the featured photo on the Tiffany page is of a ring that is not described as a Tiffany & Co. ring and is therefore arguably not a "Tiffany setting" ring. These are features that are true of both "Tiffany setting" rings and prong setting rings in general; one is just a subset of the other. In fact, a discussion of prong setting features in general is necessary to distinguish Tiffany set rings from other prong set rings. Given its established status as a trademarked brand of prong set rings, creating an accurate and fully sourced article for "Tiffany setting" would be not only be duplicating efforts on this page, but also giving undue weight to one particular brand of prong setting rings.

The cleanest approach is to merge into prong setting and include the distinguishing characteristics of "Tiffany setting" rings in this page.
