Why does it compete?[edit]

I came to this page hoping to read an explanation for why Puerto Rico competes separately in the olympics rather than as part of the United States' olympic team. If anyone has information about that, I think it would make a good addition to the page. 24.18.198.220 (talk) 23:04, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic delegations have never been required to be independent sovereign states only (see Bohemia, Hong Kong, Palestin, Saarland, etc.). AnonMoos (talk) 18:27, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It happened that as the United Kingdom began to consider different models (other than granting independence) to concede greater autonomy to its territories, some of these territories were allowed separate Olympic teams, always with permission from the Crown. Before their Independence, India, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad y Tobago among others had their own Olympic delegations. Of the remaining U.K. territories, Bermuda is the oldest with its own Olympic team since 1936, followed by the Cayman Islands (1976) and the British Virgin Islands (1984). At that time, this was allowed by the International Olympic Committee because these territories were self-governing and technically not 'part of' the the U.K., just as how the U.S. Government itself said that Puerto Rico "belongs to, but is not part of" the U.S. Following suit, other countries' territories were so allowed, including four of the five U.S. territories that also have their own delegations: Puerto Rico (1948), the U.S. Virgin Islands (1967), and Guam and American Samoa each (1988) (excluding only Northern Marianas). Interestingly enough, under some other rules, Cuba (1900) and the Philippines (1924-1936) also had their own Olympic delegations prior to their independences from the U.S., yet their situations were different since Cuba was on its way to independence and the Philippines was fighting an independence war.--Coquidragon (talk) 15:16, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Medallists[edit]

Should there be any reference here to the Puerto Ricans who have also earned medals as part of the U.S. delegation? See this template used in the page Sports in Puerto Rico. {{Puerto Ricans Olympic Medallists}} --Coquidragon (talk) 15:14, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
