Elisha ben Avuya

[edit]

Where is the source that Rabbi Yishmael is also Elisha ben Avuya? I have looked in several places and found no mention of this. Also, Rabbi Nechuniah ben HaKaneh was Rabbi Yishmael's teacher, not another name for Rabbi Yishmael. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Commontater (talkcontribs) 05:27, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No idea. It is probably someone's "theory" But Elisha ben Abuya is also cited in Mishnah in a few places by this name. Also, the Talmud specifically states that Elisha ben Abuya was never granted ordination in Berachot. There is a Yishmael ben Elisha who was a high priest and martyr. And then there is this Yishmael ben Elisha who is a student of Nehuniah ben HaKaneh. The only thing I can think of is that someone would reason there are not too many laws in the name of Elisha ben Abuyah, and there are many in the name of Yishmael ben Elisha, which supiciously was the name of a high priest who lived two generations earlier. But it is original research as there are no cited sources, and certainly not the Talmud itself.96.238.211.171 (talk) 07:27, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The birth date discrepancy

[edit]

See Talk:3 Enoch#Two Rabbi Ishmaels for a brief discussion of why I suspect there is a dating problem for his birth, as I note here in section Life. For now I'm being bold, and am going to look up some sources to clarify this mess. --Eliyahu S Talk 17:22, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
