Just curious about the "fact" that racism is not rampant in Portugal. Was this article written by someone who has ever lived here? I live near Lisbon. The racist junk that I hear being spewed by just about every Portuguese I meet is unbelievable. They assume that since I am a white Anglo-Saxon from America I must feel the same way they do about "all these damn n***ers". Racism is rampant, unhidden and in-your-face here in Portugal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.155.19.39 (talk) 02:31, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also object to this stated fact in the opening paragraph. There is racist graffiti throughout Lisbon and other cities, segregation, and all the other ills of racism present.76.28.238.159 (talk) 22:20, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lusotropicalist Propoganda?

[edit]

The initial opening sentence to this article read like 1970's era lusotropicalist apologetics for Portugal's African colonial empire (see lusotropicalism). I therefore removed the unsupported opening sentence suggesting that racism in Portugal is rare and replaced it with undeniable historical fact that Portugal was the first white European nation to colonize Africa and enslave blacks. This fact provides a significant and necessary context to any subsequent discussion of racism in Portugal. PortugalEditor (talk) 07:59, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Portugal is a country with a past of miscegenation and openess to other peoples and cultures" This is not frickin Brazil you know! I agree that the Portuguese people is not an inherently racist people and that it is a "people of calm ways" as Camões said "brandos costumes" but to say that Portugal has a past of miscegenation and openess to others is insulting. I am going to change that. What miscegenation is that? Are you referring to the miscegenation between Celts and Iberians? Go see Ophiussa, you may understand what level of miscegenation we are talking about. Well, you can research some academic studies and you may understand that Celts are not all that Hitlerian Nordic type of men they sometimes are equated with by some ignorant bastards. Go find out what black Irish means. And I am wanting you to show me some evidence of the importance of pre Indo European/Celtic Iberian peoples in the Portuguese population. They existed of course, but not that much so that we can say there was a past of miscegenation. The North South divide is elucidative in that matter. Maybe the past of miscegenation is referring to the Roman empiere. Yeah, the Romans contributed genetically a lot to the peoples they conquered. It is a fact. Get serious people! Or is it the Germanic tries, there is truth in that. There were some amount of miscegenation but, as you can see by the people we do not look Germanics because we are not. Actually, the germanics were dying for being such a warrior like people. Another miscegenation is with moors. Yes, there was some muslim rapes commited against white Christian women as muslims like to do. Five hundred years of esporadic rapes. But it can nor amount to a "past of miscegenation" specially, because such children were raised as muslim. If you are talking of the miscegenation of Portuguese men in their colonies, it is not in Portugal, it is in Africa and Brazil and it is dued to the simple fact that there was no Portuguese or European women available, not for a "past of miscegenbation". If you want to rewrite History, you better write a book of ypur own instead of descerditing wikipedia even further.

What "openess to other peoples and cultures" are you thinking? Is it Ophiussa and the Celtic genocide of Iberian peoples? Is it the Lusitanian and Galician war against the Romans? Is it the Suebi religious cults carried on eben against the pope will? Is it the 500 years of ininterrupt war against the moors? Is it the many wars we have had against Spain in order to secure our independence and our ways? Is it the Galician singularity after more than 1000 years of Sanishisation? Is it the openess we showed to Napoleon when he was conquering all Europe? Is it the creation of Civilisation in Brazil against all the uncivilised primitive peoples that inhabited it back then? Is it the creation of Civilisation in Africa against all the uncivilised primitive peoples that are still living there? Or is it the imposition of European civilisation in Asia in places like Macau or Goa?

I am curious

Your curiosity is fair. As you know, miscegenation happened outside mainland Portugal, among Portuguese whites and black peoples from Africa. Large scale miscegenation in the Portuguese Empire started since the colonization of Brazil by Portugal with amerindians and black slaves. Accuracy will be glad that somewhere in the article we could say something about these historical facts. Pularoid (talk) 16:24, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portugal was the main slave-trading country. Blacks enslaved. Jews persecuted. Arabs, Slavs and Gypsies hated.

[edit]

Portuguese people were the main traders of the enslaved Black Africans during the Atlantic Slave Trade. What is more, they persecuted Jews during the inquisition (Sephardi Jews killed and expelled), which was not only because of Judaism, but also the ethnicity (persecuted marranos). They also made some pogroms of the Roma (Gypsies). Nowadays they are polite people, on the contrary to Spanish people. However calling Blacks "cockroaches" is not polite. Racism is still present there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.218.158.26 (talk) 12:19, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Never heard people calling blacks cockroaches, people simply call "preto" (black). I doubt people would discriminate Jews based on ethnicity even in the past. Religion, in the past, yes. It was a major issue for discrimination. As for the Gypsies there are cultural issues with that community that does not fit well into Portuguese mainstream culture. Slavs hated? Your comment was in fact racist against the Portuguese, because it is based on your stupidity, and an attempt to create racial hate against the Portuguese, based on stupidity alone. Anything rational or realistic on your opinion, that's why you didn't signed your comment.--Pedro (talk) 17:48, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
