The name

Isn't Radio 4 UK Theme the name used for this piece, and therefore a better name for this article? I'll create a redirection from there to here, then we can argue about renaming things. --Mpk 22:25, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

I completely agree. the article should be moved there. Bwithh 03:09, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Done. Fixing the redirects. --Mpk 07:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Apologies for the inaccuracies originally. I am impressed with how this entry has grown; I was the original poster of the article in its original form, but I have to admit there has been a LOT of research done since, and it is completely up to date with the decision by the new controller of Radio 4 to scrap it. Thanks to all who have corrected items originally inaccurate. =- Whisperwolf 03:06, 3 February 2006 (GMT)

Arrangers

Although it has always been credited to Fritz Spiegl, the single states that the UK Theme was arranged by Manfred Arlan and Fritz Spiegl, and this was how it was announced on Brian Kay's Light Programme on the 6th of April.[1] Should this be added to the article, or does it simply refer to the single release? Rob 16:09, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Good question. Can someone who has the CD have a look if it clarifies this? I know the manuscript was found in the Spiegls' loft, so maybe there were some bits missing which had to be reconstructed before it could be recorded. But Brian Kay made it sound like they originslly wrote it together. I can't find any info on Manfred Arlan on the web (unless he's was better known as a writer).
Incidentally, thanks for the link to the Light Programme. Now I've been able to hear the new recording. I would have bought a download of it, but refuse to while they are all full of DRM (and won't play on my computer anyway). I have to say, I prefer the original recording. JRawle (Talk) 17:50, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
I have the CD and it says Manfred Arlan and Fritz Spiegl arranged it on the sleeve, so perhaps it was a collaboration, although it seems odd that he hasn't been mentioned before, given the coverage of it. As for the new recording, I quite like it. It's a little more subtle than the original, perhaps because it's a smaller orchestra. Rob 21:02, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Oddly enough I find the original version more subtle, well I think it begins that way and then rises to a more triumphant feel. When I looked at the liner notes a few days ago I too pondered the same question, the Torygraph discusses it here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/02/27/ntheme27.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/02/27/ixhome.html hope it will be of help. Tony2Times 12:47, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh right, thanks for the link; that's quite interesting - perhaps another addition for the "controversy" section. The plot thickens! Rob 16:50, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

BBC website

Take a look at the text describing the theme, which has appeared on the BBC website today. I wonder where they got it from? [2] JRawle (Talk) 11:30, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I noticed that as well. It's probably a good idea to mention that here, too, just in case somebody thinks that it's a "copyvio" from the BBC page. This is the edit from the 5th of March where the four section format was introduced. Rob 12:08, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
I spotted that immediately, too! Very cheeky (and lazy) of them - though surely testament to the exhaustive detail of the piece (and the thoroughness of the writer)! They haven't even bothered to correct the typo "as well the national maritime tradition" - it should, of course, read "as well AS the national maritime tradition"! Though for some strange reason, they've changed the line "The theme is a fantasia of traditional British tunes" to "The UK Theme is a fantasia of traditional and Irish tunes"... And they should really have credited the original author of that part of the article; though perhaps they thought it was enough just to include a link to the Wikipedia page! UK Theme Album

This address was posted on the main page as a place to send support for an album including the UK Theme: Rob 18:17, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

People are urged to register their interest in this project by e-mailing their details to: info@earlyonemorning.co.uk , or writing to: Sweetspot Music, c/o ReMark, Roxboro House, West Park Road, St. Helens, UK, WA10 4LJ. The UK Theme single contains an insert which can be returned to the aforementioned postal address free of charge.

Fair enough, I suppose! I didn't know about this 'talk' page before. So, to start a new discussion you press the "+" button, but what is the correct way to reply to an existing thread? (I'm sure I haven't done it right!)

No problem, I just thought a full address looked a little untidy on the main page. It's OK here though I would imagine, and I've put a link here from there. I hadn't read about an album until it was posted here actually, but sounds pretty good. Is there anything on the internet about it? As for the talk page, to post a reply I usually press the "edit" button next to the section heading then add a comment. Also, if you put a : at the beginning, it indents the comment and if you type four ~s it puts a signature and time on the end. Rob 18:08, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. It's strange that you didn't know about the album before! Don't you have the single? All the copies that I've seen contain a colour insert that says: "Thank you for buying the 'Save the Radio 4 Theme' campaign single. Proceeds from sales go to the British Light Music Society & Library. The same team are planning a full-length album of celebrated pieces selected from the tradition of Great British light music. 'Early One Morning' takes the form of a journey around the British Isles in one musical day. We shall set off at dawn to the rousing strains of the UK Theme, and end with that familar friend, Sailing By. On the way we shall visit the nation's favourite tunes such as Country Gardens and Lilliburlero, the BBC World Service theme. If you would like to be kept informed about the CD, please fill in your details below and drop this pre-paid card in the post. Or send an email with your details to info@earlyonemorning.co.uk. Thank you." However, there is no mention of this album whatever on the campaign website, so perhaps it won't happen... Naturally, I hope it does, because it sounds like a real treat! It's therefore very important that everyone who bought the single shows their support by sending their details by post and/or email! Eljay* 00:26, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't remember an insert, although it's quite possible it fell out... Looking at the sleeve notes, it also states that a website called "www.earlyonemorning.co.uk" would be about the single, but at the moment that just appears to redirect to the "save the radio 4 theme" site. Rob 17:58, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Indeed... All the more strange that said website does not mention the album at all! Eljay* 19:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Scheduling

Quote: The piece was played every day at 5:30am when Radio 4 began broadcasting...

This was true at the time that it was dropped, but not in 1978, when the theme was first used to open what was then called "Radio 4 UK" at something more like 5.55 on weekdays (the first programme of the day then was "News Briefing" at 6.00, followed by "Farming Today"; "Today" didn't begin until 6.30 in those days). -- Picapica 22:49, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
