Name of Rajasthan?

What does the toponym Rajasthan mean? I'm assuming it means "Land of Kings"? Le Anh-Huy 18:50, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

History section needs rewrite

The History section in this article begins with Rajputana and projects as if there was no history earlier. It is misleading and needs to rewrite. The early history has not been mentioned so it may be added.

Rajputana name for Rajasthan prior to independence creates confusion as if Rajput population is in majority in this state. Thakur Deshraj has provided facts that total Jat population in Rajasthan in 1931 census was 11,42,025 where as Rajput population was 6,33,830. Thus Jats were about double the population of Rajputs. Shekhawati was part of Jaipur state, which had the highest Jat population of 3,13,609. In some of the princely states it was about 25 percent of total population, forming the single largest caste. As per Imperial Gazeteer of India v-8, p-22, More than 44 per cent of the population in Bhadra tehsil in 1901, were Jats at that time.

Historical traditions are that Jats, Bhils, Ahirs, Gujars, Meenas and some other tribes had a great contribution in building the state of Rajasthan along with Rajputs. All these tribes had to suffer great difficulties to protect their culture and the land. Millions of them martyred for this land. ‘The Hinduan Suraj’ title to Udaipur was due to Bhils. Jats had been fighting since beginning. Gujars had been exterminated in Bhinmal and Ajmer areas fighting with the invaders. Bhils ruled Kota and Bundi one time. Gujars were sardars in Alwar, Jodhpur and Ajmer areas.

The truth is that purohits, Charans and Court poets out of greed for money and land gave prominence to Rajputs. Later James Tod wrote annals after taking bribe from Maharaja Udaipur and Maharaja Jodhpur of the Rajputana state. He was biased towards these states and Rajputs. The earlier contributions of warriors and protectors of the land Jats, Bhils, Gujars and Meenas were neglected and lost in the history.

Jats lived in the Thar Desert since ancient times according to the puranic sources. They were also settled in Sindh and Punjab who migrated to the desert area of Rajasthan from time to time. The Author of the book ‘India of the dark ages’ writes that Jat republics were present in Rajasthan. Rule of Yaudheyas in desert area and naga Jats in Nagaur has been mentioned. These republics were there till the rule of Harshavardhana. After the fall Harsha in 647 AD, the Jat republics weakened due to invasions by Mugals, Turks, Muslims and Yavanas. In the sixth and seventh century when new Agnikula clan of Rajputas was created in mount Abu, many of the Jat clans merged in them. Rajput sangha was formed from Gujar clans also. The Jat clans who joined Rajput sangha were termed Rajputs. Jat clans who did not leave the Vedic tradition of widow marriage remained in Jat sangha. Later during Muslim rule, to avoid the excesses by Mugals some of these Rajputs started child marriages of girls and the widow marriages, these groups left Rajput sangha and joined again the Jats and Gurjars. According to the records of Bhats, the rule of Anangapal and Prithvi Raj Chauhan was on these Jat areas of Ajmer, Sambhar, Fulera, and Shekhawati and up to Delhi. After the fall of Prithvi Raj Chauhan, there was no alternative left for these clans except to join the Jat sangha. The large number of common clans amongst Rajputs, Jats and Gurjars indicates that intermixing of clans with these sanghas was a trend at that time.

I could not understand what does the Map of Rajputana has the significance. It has text massage under the image - Image:Rajputana 1909.jpg|thumb|right|250px|

"Rajsthan was known as Rajputana before its formation in 1949. You can clearly view the difference between 1909 and 1949".

It is not clear what does this image want to prove. It seems against NPOV policy of Wikipedia and may be considered for removing or refitting. --burdak 04:31, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

1949 or 1956?

The text says that the state was formed in 1949, but the info box gives a date in 1956. Which is correct? Did the borders or the name change between these two years? Indus Valley

Official language

Is Rajasthani really one of the official languages of Rajasthan? I thought Hindi was the official language of Rajasthan, although most of the citizens speak Rajasthani. --SameerKhan 01:23, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Various dialects of Rajasthani (such as Mewari, Marwari, Dhoondari etc. are spoken in different areas of Rajasthan. The Government uses Hindi and to some extent English for its official work. rakshat12:15, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Marwaris

Article quality

I just tried to improve the Tourism in Rajasthan section. Here are a few suggestions, to people adding to the article, based on what I saw there:

- Avoid the temptation to list more and more things in a single sentence. Most sentences should be short and punchy, and should not be lists.

- Before adding something, ask yourself: is it _really_ one of the most famous, important features of Rajasthan? Only then should you add it.

- If a sentence does list things, usually they should be of the same type -- for example, it could be a list of cities, or a list of palaces.

- Specific places, forts, etc. should be capitalized (Jaipur, Lake Palace, ...). Non-specific things should not; we might talk in general about Rajasthan's forts, palaces, temples, etc.

- I know many of you are not native English speakers, but to the extent possible, follow the rules of grammar and punctuation.

- Avoid overly colorful language. Don't say things like Rajasthan is the heart and soul of India, with unparalleled beauty and grandeur... remember, this is an encyclopedia, not an advertisement!

In general, it's great when you add info to the article, but try to maintain the quality of the article in the process. Kier07 (talk) 16:23, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Separatists movement

I can find no reliable sources that even mention the Rajputana Liberation Front. Can anyone confirm that it consists of anything more than three men and their dog? Have they received coverage (no matter how little) in any reliable source? Skinsmoke (talk) 20:31, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Agreed. Unfortunately, the section on "Politics" is practically useless. Even the main article linked is more about personalities than the actual politics. The section really needs expansion. If it can be demonstrated that the "Rajputana Liberation Front" actually exists, and has been reported on, whether within India or abroad, even if it has not contested elections or been involved in extra-parliamentary activity (its website claims that it is non-violent, so we would be talking about campaigning on issues, or even a single issue), then it would be appropriate to mention it, as has been done with the nationalist organisations at Cornwall. However, I have a suspicion that this particular organisation is, at least to date, little more than a couple of friends talking in their living room. Skinsmoke (talk) 04:06, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

There is no "Rajputana Liberation Front" in India, The ONLY website that exists out there on the Internet is owned by Pakistani nationalists (tracing the only RLF website through IP). If there was such thing it would have made headlines in the media in India, there should be atlest media articles on that subject if it existed like Kashmir Separatist movement and Khalistan movement for example but there is none. It should not be promoted.

Clean up in history

The History section need a clean up. The second half of it has no citations about many battles and facts. Also, there is too much zeal in the writing: especially in the second half, too much narration about the battles.

History section

This article relies too heavily on zealous puffers-up of history such as Thakur Deshraj. Rajasthan is a well-documented region and there is no need at all to use such sources. Deshraj is actually the best of the bunch - as the article phrasing indicates, there are far worse pseudo-historian sources being cited. I realise that the main article is History of Rajasthan but I dread to look at that one. A massive clean-up of the section is required and, really, should not be too difficult. Of course, I'm saying nothing hew here - it has been said by others above - but perhaps it is about time that we did something about it. - Sitush (talk) 12:39, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Nuclear bomb

There's a thing going around claiming that the radiation is really high there, and that there's birth defects of people that live there, and that it's hypothesized tht there was a nuclear bomb blast here about 12,000 years ago, I know it's probably bullshit, but you may want to include a section on it.

Economy

In the second paragraph in the section on Rajasthan#Economy is found the following sentence:

"It has rich salt deposits at Sambhar, copper mines at Khetri, Jhunjhunu, and zinc mines at Dariba, Zawar mines at Zawarmala for zinc, Rampura Aghucha (opencast) near Bhilwara."

The part after "Jhunjhunu" is not clear: "and zinc mines at...". Could someone who knows the topic (and the geography) clear this up? CorinneSD (talk) 00:21, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Rajputs

Since Rajasthan was previously known as Rajputana, is it likely that the largest people group in the region (Rajasthanis) are in fact Rajputs?

New pages/sections about Rajasthan

Hi, I noticed that there is still very small percentage of content about Rajasthan is digitally available on Wikipedia, particularly about its Tehsils, Towns and Villages. A huge amount of useful information about this is available on Census 2011 portal
I have started putting content regarding Udaipur, see Udaipur_district#Divisions.2C_Sub_divisions_.26_Tehsils Similarly, i also created Girwa, and added list of towns and villages as well. Now I plan to create a page of every town and village, from this list. Since this is huge list, seek help from other participants as well. Thanks Vishal0soni (talk) 09:50, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Rather than the huge list of villages you've added to the article it might instead be better to create the category "Villages in Girwa Tehsil". Wikipedia policy deprecates indiscriminate lists, particularly when they are this long.  Philg88 ^♦talk 12:09, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

In long term, i plan to create a page for every village.My aim is to make these names searchable. Currently these names do not exists at all anywhere. Can put this in form of a table for now? If you are going to create stub articles for each village then as a minimum you need to add the geographical coordinates to verify each one's existence. For now, I would leave the list as it is rather than convert it to a table with additional info since this will duplicate the village articles you intend to create. The good spirits include murdered royalty, the underworld god Bhaironji, and Muslim saints. Bad spirits include perpetual debtors who die in debt, stillborn infants, deceased widows, and foreign tourists. The possessed individual is referred to as a ghorala ("mount"). Possession, even if it is by a benign spirit, is regarded as undesirable, as it entails loss of self-control and violent emotional outbursts.

Untitled

Removed Land under irrigation totals 46.5 million hac.

Rajasthan [7] is a state in the north western region of India. The state covers an area of 342,239 square kilometres (132,139 sq mi) or 10.4 percent of the total geographical area of India. It is the largest Indian state by area and the seventh largest by population. Rajasthan is located on the northwestern side of India, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the "Rajasthan Desert" and "Great Indian Desert") and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus river valley. Elsewhere it is bordered by five other Indian states: Punjab to the north; Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the northeast; Madhya Pradesh to the southeast; and Gujarat to the southwest.

Major features include the ruins of the Indus Valley Civilisation at Kalibanga; the Dilwara Temples, a Jain pilgrimage site at Rajasthan's only hill station, Mount Abu, in the ancient Aravalli mountain range; and, in eastern Rajasthan, the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, a World Heritage Site[8] known for its bird life. Rajasthan is also home to three national tiger reserves, the Ranthambore National Park in Sawai Madhopur, Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar and Mukundra Hill Tiger Reserve in Kota.

The state was formed on 30 March 1949 when Rajputana – the name adopted by the British Raj for its dependencies in the region[9] – was merged into the Dominion of India. The following paragraph under History > Modern is unreferenced and out of place in its current location. Interested editors are invited to fix it. I will revisit in a couple of days and, if no changes have been made and there are no objections, will delete it.

The entire Higher Education section is unreferenced, which is unbecoming for a page with Top-importance rating. I invite interested editors to add citations to this sections. If none are made, I intend to delete this section.Deccantrap (talk)

@Deccantrap: While you seem to be correct regarding the inclusion of mapsofindia.com sources, but the removal of the whole section might not be a good idea since a lot of the entries are of notable institutions wikilinked into it. These are reliably sourced in the respective articles. Most Indian state articles do not have sources for the wikilinked educational institutions as you can see in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (GA) and Maharashtra. Secondly, you should have waited a little longer or raise the matter in WP:IN if in a hurry. I'd suggest you to re-included the names of the notable institutions back into the article. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 10:08, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

@Fylindfotberserk: Thanks for the input. You are right that the deleted material contained a number of wikilinks. But I think retaining that compilation of wikilinks alone is not a sufficient reason to keep the section, for two reasons: (1) There is an existing link to a list of educational institutions at the top of the Education section and (2) under WP:NOTDIRECTORY, a simple listing without context information is not desirable. Compare with the higher education section of California which, while it does wikilink selected institutions, provides a general overview of the education system in the state. With that background in mind, if you still feel the section should be restored, I would be happy to do so myself. Summer temperature can exceed 54°C !!!

In the geography part of Rajasthan, there is written that sometimes summer temperature can exceed 54°C. It is certainly wrong as Rajasthan's highest recorded temperature is 51°C, in Phalodi. Under the "Wildlife protection" section Bharatpur's national park's name is written as Keladevi National Park instead of "Keoladeo National Park". May 2023 additions

There is an issue regarding this recent addition which says - "..Rajputs first entered India from the north west in the first millennium A.D....". Rajput is not a foreign group, they formed within the subcontinent. Andrew Topsfield is a museum curator not a historian, so the source used would fail WP:HISTRS. No doubt, Pov edits. There are various theories regarding origin of Rajputs. The origin of Rajputs from some of the indegeneous tribes and communities like Gurjar, Meena etc is also one view. Although a theory also says that some of them were descendant of foreign tribes, but, mentioning that "they all entered India in a particular period" isn't historically correct. Hi Everyone! Thank you for addressing these issues! I completely understand your arguments against the edit, and I’m open to making changes.

1) Regarding the source: I acquired the information from a conference paper included within the peer-reviewed Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society. The journal is also edited by a historian of India, G. H. R. Tillotson, abiding by the scholarly process defined in WP:HSC. The paper is originally written by Kulbhushan Jain (an architectural historian), but within it, he cites Andrew Topsfield's work from Paintings of Rajasthan in the National Gallery of Victoria. While Topsfield is a curator, he is also a well-published scholar of art history, with particular experience in art under the Maharanas of Mewar (Rajputs). Therefore, I deem the source to be credible. However, I am open to further discussion on the topic!

2) Regarding the language: I understand how the wording makes it seem as if all the Rajputs entered India in a particular period, which would be incorrect. Perhaps this can be altered to suggest that some Rajputs came during that time. But as I reread Topsfield's words, I am unsure if that will change the meaning he puts forth. These are Topsfield's words: "The Rajputs, ‘sons of kings’, had originally entered India from the north­ west during the first millennium A.D. They established kingdoms in western India in a region that came to be called Rajasthan, ‘the abode of kings*. Like previous immigrants from Central Asia, they were assimilated into the all-embracing Hindu social system as Kshatriyas or members of the warrior caste."

To me, his words do come off as if "they all entered India in a particular period." Since the origin of Rajputs is much-debated between historians, I can see the value of adding Topsfield's perspective as one such view, but I am also wary of it just being plainly false.

Point is, the source implies that the Rajputs, bearing that particular moniker, entered the subcontinent from the northwest in 1000 AD, while my understanding is that the term as well as the group formed within the subcontinent, corroborated by many reliable sources. We need a large number of WP:HISTRS sources to support claims like that. Until now, I've seen these foreign origin claims largely in Raj era sources and the ones that copy from them. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 20:07, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Land area
