Could you explain your edit comment here [1]? Hornplease 21:23, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. Population of India is more than 1000,000,000 inhabitants, and we can expect “some” namesakes in this population. In this context, abbreviate an only firstname is inane. More, it's not Wikipedia policy. --Juiced lemon 21:40, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. There are several people named Bill Clinton, as well, but we do not move his page to William Jefferson Clinton on the off chance. For the convention of surname and initial, see the pages M. G. Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi for comparable articles. This is a cultural aspect of how Tamils are named, and we respect it on WP. See WP:Bias. Hornplease 22:37, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is the main page of the Wikipedia project in Tamil language. Here, we contribute to the English Wikipedia project, with the policy and the rules of this project. Articles about people are named according to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people), and your claims about local cultural aspects are unsourced and irrelevant. The page WP:Bias contains only general reflections without practical usefulness. More, this is a project page, so its contents is pointless. --Juiced lemon 12:09, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Err, yes. There are no 'rules' in these issues, only guidelines.
Secondly, I would like to remind you that this is the English wikipedia, and India contains a 350 million English speakers. The vast majority of those clicking through to a link for a President of India would be from that number. Certainly, Western or North Indian naming conventions are irrelevant here.
Thirdly, this is made explicit by policy, which you are in violation of: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people)#Nick names, pen names, stage names, cognomens specifies that in the case of cognomens using initials, those are to be used. (The example given is H.G.Wells.) I also direct your attention to WP:UCN.
Finally, I suggest you get off your "English Wikipedia" high horse. It may irritate people not as tolerant as I. Hornplease 23:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For the benefit of the admin working through wp:rm, I should ask: I presume that you have no further objections? Hornplease 10:43, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1. Rule or guideline: what is the purpose of your comment?
2. Your statement about Indian readers is unverifiable and I classify it amongst gratuitous assertions. Any naming convention which is not supported by the English Wikipedia project is irrelevant: you have just forgotten to link the appropriate Wikipedia page.
3. “in the case of cognomens using initials”: precisely, it's not the case. Your claims about any usage of initial for the firstname remain unsourced, and unfortunatly, the Encyclopaedia Britannica doesn't follow your confuse reasoning and spells Ramaswamy Venkataraman.
I suggest you to soften your attitude, grounds to the lack of reliability of your informations. --Juiced lemon 19:53, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Guidelines are "not set in stone", and should be treated with "common sense".
  • 350 million comes from here.
  • Google President "R. Venkataraman" and you get 19000 hits. President "Ramaswamy Venkataraman" gets 1760.
  • Usage of initials rather than full names: Consider the official website of the President: Former presidents. Note that Venkataraman uses his initials as does K. R. Narayanan, both South Indian.
I'm afraid there are very solid reasons here. Hornplease 12:03, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

As the more common way of referring to the person in question, the abbreviated name is favoured. This article has been renamed from Ramaswamy Venkataraman to R. Venkataraman as the result of a move request. --Stemonitis 17:03, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Family[edit]

This article needs to talk more about R. Venkataraman's family. I am a distant relative of his. I might be able to help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.159.208 (talk) 18:58, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hornplease Edits[edit]

This Hornplease is only interested in blowing his own trumpet pretending that his thoughts are the word of God.

My God!!! pretending that the link supporting his contention of 350 million English Users is a proof!!!! This is insane even by his insane standards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.225.217.2 (talk) 06:47, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki sure is fast![edit]

I came as quickly as possible to edit this page on hearing the news, but looks like I was beaten to it by an hour. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:17, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is very bad news, indeed! I expected him to become the first Indian President to cross the 100-mark. May peace be upon his soul!-RavichandarMy coffee shop 12:06, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
