Google's "National Crush of India" idiocy[edit]

In this edit I removed the content stating "Rashmika has been recognized as the 'National Crush of India' for this year by Google." This is, to put it bluntly, horseshit. As far as I know, Google does not issue awards like this or make value-judgments about people or things. At best they'll tell you who the most-searched person in X region is.

The "recognition" that these idiotic gossip rags and news outlets have picked up on is more clearly explained in this article, where we learn that the "recognition" that is being alleged, is a complete misinterpretation of a Google search result as an award.

This site explains that if you search for "Nation Crush Of India 2020" (they mean National), Google will present a prioritised result with the text "Rashmika Mandanna has become the national crush of India. We love her outfit choices for sure, but for now, it is her radiant makeup look that we are after." This isn't Google offering their opinion about how stylish and pretty Mandanna is, this is text that appears to have originated here at charmboard.com, and it was written in February 2020. So these idiot websites are erroneously equating the opinion of a Charmboard user as the opinion of search engine Google, and of course nobody is asking any questions. This content doesn't belong in the article, as it is clearly incorrect and we are allowed to apply common sense. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:47, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Amazing1abhi: since you have added this content twice, you should be aware of the above. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:53, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say they have given award to her, I said it was just recognition by Google search engine, if these are idiotic website then entire page should be closed because most of them are quoting TOI and other entertainment websites and if content is inappropriate then remove this as well
She is popularly dubbed by the media and Kannada film industry as the 'Karnataka Crush'. Amazing1abhi (talk) 03:57, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Amazing1abhi: It doesn't matter whether you said it was an "award" you have since called it a "recognition", which, by definition requires "cognition". Unless you can demonstrate that this was a conscious choice by Google to recognise Mandanna with this ridiculous exaggerated label, the content should be deleted, especially since, as I demonstrated, the origin of this claim is user-generated content. As for the rest of your argument, no, we don't have to delete the entire page, just the ridiculous claims that are easily found to be ridiculous. And no, sorry, just because she has been called by a few outlets the "Karnataka Crush" doesn't mean that it is plausible that Google, as an entity, would have labeled her the National Crush of India, since they (as far as I know) do not bestow indisputable titles on their search subjects. If you disagree, prove your position. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 04:29, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
More indications of poor journalism:
At least Republic World has an inkling that this is nonsense: "Though no formal announcement per se, reports of Rashmika Mandanna being declared as ‘National Crush of India’ has been doing the rounds. The ‘confirmation’ could be when someone types ‘National Crush of India’, it is Rashmika Mandanna’s name that pops up."
So, this is clearly someone's misinterpretation of a Google search result as some sort of conscious choice by a search engine that operates on non-sentient algorithms, which is spreading through the gossip-mill. It's just astounding, the level of ignorance that alleged "journalists" possess. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:43, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is golden. Nail in the coffin for the TOI. I agree with Cyphoidbomb's assessment. Zindor (talk) 21:33, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup Required[edit]

This article seems to be very poorly written especially the Career section. It cointains favourable reviews of her performances. Seems like a PR driven work. Can someone help in editing it out? defcon5 (talk) 17:52, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyphoidbomb can you please help in resolving this edit war?? The article has citations leading to twitter, YouTube, personal blogs, unreliable sites like 123telegu.com, greatandhra.com Tollywood.net, chitramala , idlebrain, India glitz, chitraloka . It contains favourable reviews of performances and some unsourced number of theatrical conquests. I removed them. But they have been been reverted. As you are an admin and monitoring this article, I am reaching out to you for discussion. defcon5 (talk) 11:26, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tigerikkada: Re: these edits, why did you silently revert DEFCON5's changes? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 13:23, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mention of National crush[edit]

I suggest that National Crush should be mentioned in this article. Not as an achievement but in some other way which I can't exactly make into words. I suggest this because even if that was user generated, it caught attention of mainstream media very much. This definitely increased her popularity across India, so this event is notable for her career, and so it is should be included.
See https://pageviews.toolforge.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&start=2020-11-01&end=2020-12-31&pages=Rashmika_Mandanna . The views were shot up when news was doing rounds i.e. around 23 November 2020 -- Parnaval (talk) 07:36, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I mentioned national crush in introduction part -- Msd fan (talk) 10:40, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ab207 I wrote this section 2 months ago, No one gave reply so I/ thought it was best to add it. This was mentioned by me, not as recognition but just that people believed it that Google recognised. Please add it back as this incident is really notable as it had significant mainstream media attention. -- Parnaval (talk) 13:02, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Parnaval. Appreciated that you left a note here but the concerns expressed by Cyphoidbomb and Zindor are still valid. The whole "National crush" thing is nothing but WP:SOAP, devoid of any encyclopedic value. Ab207 (talk) 13:12, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207: I agree that citing original website that mentioned this would have been promotional. But... What has happened here is that many big media houses published this news. So, It increased her popularity significantly. Hence, we can say this incident is big (and notable) enough to be included here. Earlier editors tried to add it like google recognised, which was false. But I am adding info which is true and neutral. Now, I am going for third opinion -- Parnaval (talk) 06:06, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Parnaval, I believe this falls under WP:NOTGOSSIP, regardless of how much attention it has got. You may ask for a third opinion but I recommend pinging the past participants to see their response. Ab207 (talk) 06:17, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have listed at third opinion but still as you say I am pinging DEFCON5, Tigerikkada and Msclrfl22, Not pinging Cyphoidbomb as they are inactive. -- Parnaval (talk) 10:55, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Ab207 regarding this being nothing but WP:SOAP. This is social media marketing gimmick with no encyclopaedic value. Clearly falls under WP:NOTGOSSIP.defcon5 (talk) 16:53, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rashmika OR Mandanna[edit]

@NinadMysuru and Sathish Kathiravan: Decide here before reverting each other. Both Rashmika and Mandanna is currently used in article appox. 50 times. Out of this, 33 times it is used together i.e. Rashmika Mandanna. So decide one thing so we can change all instances. -- Parnaval (talk) 09:27, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, I did it as per Indian name. If the name was Rashmika Rao/Sharma/Ayyar, then the subject can be referred to as Rao/Sharma/Ayyar or whatever. But here the last name is Mandanna which is patronymic (her father's name). So it's clearly says that the person should be referred to by their own name than the patronymic. NinadMysuru (talk) 09:33, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If Mandanna is patronymic, all references should be with the given name 'Rashmika' per MOS:PATRONYMIC. -- Ab207 (talk) 09:57, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct. Mandanna has to be replaced with Rashmika within the article. NinadMysuru (talk) 11:42, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I replaced Rashmika in place of Mandanna Msd fan (talk) 10:38, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Restoration of repetitive content, photos[edit]

@Jayanthkumar123, you restored without any explanation content that I had removed with proper reasons. Can you explain why this page needs one photo each from the last three years or needs to quote every line that mentions her in movie reviews?

I've reverted you because I hardly see any encyclopedic value in sentences like "is easy that pin-up girl in college" or "is cute". If you want to restore specific parts, do go ahead but I've gone through every sentence and will challenge it. Wholesale restoration of such poor content isn't productive. Hemanthah (talk) 11:11, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hemanthah and Taggede le. Please refrain from edit warring and try to reach a consensus about the article's content. -- Ab207 (talk) 12:17, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207, I'd request more care before throwing 'edit war' around. I opened the discussion here and asked repeatedly for engagement. The quality of content being restored and the irrelevant edit summaries show that while not being outright vandalism, the reverts do not appear to be fully aware of relevant policies. And I reverted only twice. That's hardly deserving of your reproach. Hemanthah (talk) 12:52, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Hemanthah: I apologize if it came out to be harsh. My intention was to request both of you to from a consensus instead of reverting each other. -- Ab207 (talk) 14:05, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I should stop here, but just to explain my own reaction: tag at the top since August shows there's already consensus that cleanup's needed. DEFCON5 noted it here last year and even did some cleanup but was similarly reverted by an account that didn't even try engaging. All that content has stood since then. Removing challenged content, especially the kind seen here, shouldn't be this hard. Hemanthah (talk) 14:35, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

keep it in one place. Taggede le can you answer my questions on content please. --Hemanthah (talk) 12:29, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ur enditing doesn't seems like constructive, if u don't know how to edit properly the wiki, plz look in to others wiki page, do u remove those wiki pages which has an extended info with their jpg? If u want to correct or clean the wiki, go with word by word correction, not removing most of the wiki page by giving unnecessary reason. Taggede le (talk) 12:19, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Taggede le, I removed 50% not 80% as you claim. And I've justified every one of my edits. Will you answer my questions above about the content you've restored wholesale? Your reasoning that there are other messy pages elsewhere is completely irrelevant to improving this article.
Just to note, an article that's as unreadable and even border-line insulting as it is now, isn't a great way of celebrating an actress. Word count doesn't show respect, the quality of words does. Hemanthah (talk) 12:22, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For removal of 20k+ bytes, u just have given 4-5 reasons, which was also not appropriate, adding/removing the wiki page is not easy without providing proper reason. Wt made u to remove the occasional pics of Rashmika Mandu.? Don't other wiki pages have no such jpg? Totally baseless reasons. Taggede le (talk) 12:31, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Taggede le again, please keep discussion in one place. Three pics in three years where subject hasn't changed much at all - what is the value added by it? Quoting from MOS:IRELEV Resist the temptation to overwhelm an article with images of marginal value simply because many images are available.
About reasons, can you be specific about where my reasoning was wrong? For each section, I clearly said what was repeated, where it was repeated from and why that isn't encyclopedic. --Hemanthah (talk) 12:47, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Information about box office results[edit]

@CNMall41, in all FA class articles information about the box-office results of the actor's film is given, so please stop recklessly editing. 19Arham (talk) 20:49, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When did this become a FA? And can you point to the specific part of WP:LEAD where it is relevant? Let me know and I will gladly discuss but you need to WP:AGF and calling me reckless is not it. --CNMall41 (talk) 23:46, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you are attempting to make this FA. If that is the case, you should address references such as these since they are unreliable. I believe I put in an earlier edit summary that I was going to do some cleanup and these are some of the things needing addressed.--CNMall41 (talk) 00:03, 12 April 2024 (UTC)--CNMall41 (talk) 00:03, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologise, you were only trying to help. I'm just confused as to why your changes aren't aligning with other FA articles. Any changes I make on this article are usually based off of Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. 19Arham (talk) 00:42, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As per WP:ICTFSOURCES, The Hindu and India Today are generally reliable but I will change links to The Medium. 19Arham (talk) 00:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Examples that are on the page currently - India Today (reliable), India Today (not reliable).--CNMall41 (talk) 01:06, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@19Arham:, just checking to see if you had interest in cleaning up the referencing. Let me know as I would be happy to do it otherwise. We can then move on with discussing the GA if you like. --CNMall41 (talk) 03:25, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m sorry, I would genuinely do it myself but I have no clue how to differentiate between the PR articles and the unbiased ones. I would love to talk about how the article could be improved though! Thanks! 19Arham (talk) 15:24, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. Let me go through and do a few minor changes as an example of which ones should be replaced. Those I can replace with better sources I will and those that do not have a source simply tag as needing a better one. I can let you see the examples and then take it from there. Fair enough? --CNMall41 (talk) 17:48, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be perfect, thank you. Thank you for this help by the way, nobody has been willing to at all lol. 19Arham (talk) 18:11, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly think this could be a GA with the way it is fully sourced, but I know that it would get hammered in the review process if those sources are not considered reliable. --CNMall41 (talk) 17:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the first example. Especially with entertainment, press releases are picked up and turned into WP:CHURNALISM quite often. In this one, you can see how that happened here, here and other places. One of the most telling indicators is the byline. Most of these are marked as "News Desk" or "Entertainment Desk." Some do not have any byline despite being published in a reliable source that normally has bylines (Times of India is the best across the board example of this). I replaced with the DNA India. I cannot find any indication on the WP:RSN that it is unreliable (you may correct me if I am wrong) and this has a byline indicating a staff writer wrote it (also indicating editorial oversight). This would alleviate any concerns over WP:NEWSORGINDIA. Let me know if this makes sense. --CNMall41 (talk) 23:33, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Apart from references, what else do you think I need to do to improve the article? 19Arham (talk) 12:44, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For this, I don't understand how it's unreliable, not disagreeing with you, just a genuine question. 19Arham (talk) 12:48, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The reference has no byline which is the first indicator. But, if you search the topic in Google, you will see that this is one of many articles that are part of a WP:CHURNALISM campaign so likely originated from a press release or paid media. No independent fact checking. --CNMall41 (talk) 22:39, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

General and additional comments
  1. Regarding citations, please use uniform and standard formatting across the article. For all news sources, use "cite news" with newspaper tag used with link such as newspaper=The Times of India. Dates shall be in uniform formatting, better to have it in the format "1 December 2023" rather than different formats like "2023-12-01" or "01-12-2023" or "1 December 2023".

19Arham, it would be better if you address each comment specifically and indicate the progress on how you had addressed it. On dipstick, there are still comments which are unaddressed. (E.g. still citations have all CAPS) You also seemed to have removed the entire section of her upcoming/future films, any reason? Magentic Manifestations (talk) 05:28, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
