Age[edit]

User:Drmies and User:Parkwells: This source from the Montgomery Advertiser says she was 25 when she was captured.Zigzig20s (talk) 02:02, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yep--but it also says she was a princess from the (non-existent) Tarkan tribe. The whole article is in a weird exoticizing condescending kind of language, with "Aunt Sally" being all happy about how the white men in Alabama took her in... Drmies (talk) 04:15, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I find the discrepancy concerning--has Dr Durkin commented on it? I would say we need to do more research and add more context (although it may be fine for a DYK). We need to create the Quarles Plantation, established by Colonel Washington Smith, George Quarles's grandfather. Smith was probably a colonel in the CSA, which wouldn't necessarily make him notable, but if Smith or Quarles served in the Alabama House of Representatives or Senate, then we could create their articles...A quick google search tells me George P. Quarles was a state senator, but I can't find his obituary on Newspapers.com. (Was he related to William Andrew Quarles?)Zigzig20s (talk) 04:37, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Durkin writes, "Redoshi’s assertion that she was 12 years old when she was kidnapped contrasts with Flock’s claim that she was a woman of 25 and The Negro Farmer’s suggestion that she was well past her 110th year when she was interviewed. Census data are inconsistent, which makes it impossible to determine her actual birth year. However, her extreme longevity in the U.S. supports the younger age, as does the fact that half of the women on board the Clotilda were children.".Zigzig20s (talk) 04:50, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think the discrepancy should be mentioned in the article, especially since the Montgomery Advertiser interview quotes her talking about seeing her husband killed. She appears to have presented herself at that time as previously married, and that should be respected with a mention. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:20, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
