Archaeology[edit]

A possible source, to permit reinstatement of the Archaeology section might be this one? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:17, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Centre of Newport[edit]

Where is the centre of Newport, from which distance is measured? If we take the Westgate Hotel, Redwick is actually 8.4 miles (13.5 km) by road. Or about 8 miles as the crow flies. I'd suggest also using the same format for Nash, Goldcliff and Whitson. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:29, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:KJP1, do you have a view? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:26, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No really. I'm not a big fan of those, A is Z miles from B, Y miles from C, and X miles from D, starts to location articles than some favour. But then, I don't like, "is a small village and community", either. What on earth is a village if not a community? But they have become ubiquitous, and it's not worth a battle. That said, if you had to decide on the "centre" of Newport, I think the Westgate is as good as any. It's certainly not the City Hall at Stow Hill which is someway off the centre. Well at least here it's tucked under "Location." These values can be misleading as they are assumed to be direct distance and not road distance. And it's never clear to me what are the criteria for which places to include, e.g. who cares how far it is from London, etc. Maybe there is advice somewhere. I would imagine their proximity to London is of little interest to the residents of Redwick. Now, of much more concern to me, is this very depressing article, [1]. What a tragedy. I used to enjoy many a pint in the Six Bells. Did you know it? KJP1 (talk) 11:05, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A great shame. I did know it, but "never frequented". Martinevans123 (talk) 11:09, 10 April 2024 (UTC) p.s. but not yet finished, it seems.[reply]
