The result of the move request was: NOT MOVED. At present, there is no consensus to move Reece James (footballer, born 1999) to the dab page, Reece James. The central argument, which went unrefuted, is that there's no clear primary topic. It's possible this may change at some point in the future, as suggested by one editor, but this is a case of not yet and too soon. Doug Mehus T·C 11:55, 24 January 2020 (UTC) (non-admin closure)

Reece James (footballer, born 1999)Reece James – Reece James now well established as a Chelsea FC first team player. He would be the first Reece James that people would think of when searching. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 21:30, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose - no evidence at all that this is PRIMARYTOPIC. This is a young player in his second season as a first-team player; Reece James (footballer, born 1993) on the other hand is in his 7th and there is also Reece James (comedian). Saying "He would be the first Reece James that people would think of when searching" is a) untrue (as it was the 1993 player for me until this guy popped up; now it depends entirely on the context and neither is the one I immediately think of) and b) unsupported by anything at all. GiantSnowman 21:56, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment - Any search for "Reece James" on Google provides pages upon pages of articles regarding the current Chelsea player. Reece James (footballer, born 1993) will sink further into obscurity as an average League One player. This move will eventually happen, so it might as well happen now.
Regarding moving the Reece James disambiguation page to Reece James (disambiguation): I was unaware that attempting to move a page to a page that already existed would not work, so I made that change first, and then realised that I could not move Reece James (footballer, born 1999) to Reece James. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 22:22, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment - I agree that this will happen eventually. Reece James (born 1993) is an obscure League One (third-tier) footballer, whereas Reece James (born 1999) will star for England at the European Championships this summer. The problem with the Wikipedia model is precisely issues like this -- the community won't move a page like this until hundreds of thousands (or millions) of football fans have had to make an unnecessary click to arrive at their intended destination! A little bit of forethought would be very helpful! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.20.215.126 (talk) 00:24, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Reece James (footballer, born 1999)Reece James – There are two pages for footballers named Reece James. One plays in the third tier of English football, while the other has just been called up to the England national team. I propose that, because of the vast difference in coverage between the only two people on Wikipedia named Reece James, we move Reece James (footballer, born 1999) to Reece James. We could possibly create a new page titled Reece James (disambiguation), to list Reece James (footballer, born 1993), as well as Rhys James and Reece Flanagan, who are currently listed on the Reece James page as it stands. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 13:58, 5 October 2020 (UTC) Relisting. OhKayeSierra (talk) 21:30, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Megan☺️ Talk to the monster 14:04, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Comment I was not aware of the previous move discussion above when I contested this as uncontroversial at WP:RM/TR, though six months have passed since it was closed so pinging Necrothesp, ChrisTheDude , Davidlofgren1996, GiantSnowman , Dmehus as editors in the previous discussion, I am really sorry guys for this but i thought it was neccessary. @GiantSnowman: - You've got to be kidding me if you still think Reece James 1993 is more reputable than Reece James 1999. Also, Rhys James is clearly spelt differently, and should not even be involved in this conversation, as he has his own distinct Wikipedia page (Rhys James).
Reece James 1999 is clearly the primary topic for "Reece James". You can search through page after page of Google news articles and every single one is about him. Reece James 1993 is no way near as notable. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 21:12, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
There is a 18 year old Brazilian wonderkid called 'Abraham Lincoln'. He has been linked with a big move to Europe and described as the next Ronaldo. His page views rocket because he is in the news, whereas the other Abraham Lincoln has done nothing newsworthy for decades! By your logic we would have a new PRIMARYTOPIC for that name, which is obviously nonsense. GiantSnowman 09:22, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: - I'm sorry, what??? Please show me the page for this wonderkid called Abraham Lincoln. Are you referring to Lincoln (footballer, born 2000)??? Who is known as Lincoln, and not (in any sources on the web) known as Abraham Lincoln??? Regardless, this is clearly not a good comparison, as Reece James 1999 has already surpassed Reece James 1993's achievements in football. I'm sorry, but I don't think a 26 year old Doncaster Rovers player is going to make the England squad any time. If he goes on to become the president of the United States, then sure, he would clearly become the primary topic, but somehow I do not see this happening either. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 11:54, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Mine was clearly a hypothetical situation... GiantSnowman 12:51, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
An extremely exaggerated one. Anyway, in any other situation similar to this, the players who both have (footballer, born xxxx) have been of a relatively similar level (i.e. Joe Riley and Joe Riley, Moussa Dembélé and Mousa Dembélé). However, Wikipedia has Tal Ben Haim and Tal Ben Haim (footballer, born 1989), simply because the former achieved more in his career and is more notable. Same with Ali Karimi, Ali Karimi (footballer, born 1982) and Ali Karimi (footballer, born 1994), Mark Hughes and any other footballer named Mark Hughes, Frank Lampard and Frank Lampard (footballer, born 1948), Luis Suárez and arguably as reputable: Luis Suárez (footballer, born 1935), as well as Luis Suárez (footballer, born 1938). All of the ones who don't have (footballer, born xxxx) are the primary topic because they achieved more and are more reputable. Reece James 1999 has already achieved more than Reece James 1993 in his career, and will (unless he retires tomorrow) only continue to achieve more. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 13:18, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Please, continue to a) badger me and b) engage in speculation. See also WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. GiantSnowman 14:56, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: - You are actually impossible to deal with. I'm sorry to take up your precious time by proving to you that (yet again) you're wrong. It is an objective fact that Reece James born 1999 has achieved more than Reece James born 1993. If you think it's speculation to suggest that playing for Doncaster Rovers is less of an achievement that being called up to the English national team, then it's clear that you don't actually know anything about football, and I would strongly suggest that you stop editing football articles on Wikipedia. Once again you resort to just throwing WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS at me, despite the fact that all of the examples I brought up are absolutely relevant. Also, as user:Bait30 has pointed out, the page views talk for themselves. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 15:10, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
I politely suggest that you actually read PRIMARYTOPIC - "a topic is primary for a term with respect to usage if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term. A topic is primary for a term with respect to long-term significance if it has substantially greater enduring notability and educational value than any other topic associated with that term". I simply do not believe that that criteria is met. You can disagree with me if you want, but you should not be rude about it. The 1999 player its beginning his third year as a senior player and has an England cap. Good for him. The 1993 player has been a senior player for 8 years and has nearly 150 career appearances in a professional league, winning two championships along the way...by your logic (and those of others, such as Bait30), one Premier League appearance makes somebody more notable than a player of the same name with 500 second tier appearances?! Nonsense. PS please do not ping me again. GiantSnowman 15:20, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: I should not be rude about it? Your whole tone comes across as condescending. If you haven't realised how rude you come across, then you have a problem. Once again, the page views and Google hits are a very clear indicator of who is more "sought when a reader searches for that term". It's 813,046 page views versus 151,708. I'm not sure if you understand how numbers work, as you don't seem to think this is a large gulf, but it is.
It's not even about Premier League vs Championship appearances (oh and Reece James 1993 has only thirteen second tier appearances btw). It's about having "substantially greater enduring notability". As I've already stated, Reece James 1999 already has achieved more and is more notable than Reece James 1993. However his career pans out, he will always be more notable. PS, what are you going to do, report me to the Wikipedia police? Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 15:37, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
As I've already politely asked, please do not ping me. This talk page is on my watchlist. GiantSnowman 15:57, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose per GiantSnowman and per "Oppose" !votes in the previous discussion. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 21:22, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment I would very much like to hear some justification as to how Reece James 1999 is not the primary topic. There are only Two Reece Jameses who have Wikipedia pages. 1993 and 1999. One plays in League One, one has just been called up for the England national football team. One is the third tier in English football, the other is the highest international level an English footballer can reach. One has an overwhelmingly larger pool of Google search results than the other. I'm not really sure how there is a debate here. And GS, if you still think about Reece James 1993 before you think of Reece James 1999, then I would seriously have to question your footballing knowledge - as you have questioned mine before. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 21:44, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment to thank @Synoman Barris: for the {{ping}}. Noting I was only the closer of the previous move discussion, I just thought it appropriate to note that I still have no opinion on the matter. Dmehus (talk) 22:29, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Dmehus, No problem, Doug, just pinged you as a courtesy since you were the closure of the last discussion. Otherwise hope your well and Cheers! Megan☺️ Talk to the monster 17:19, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Support: "Born 1993" has zero Premier League appearances. "Born 1999" has 27 PL appearances, multiple England youth apps, and recently received his first senior team callup. The pageviews also paint a clear picture that "born 1999" is primary.  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 02:58, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Strong oppose It's true I'm a Chelsea fan, but Wikipedia guidelines before any other thing. There's no clear PRIMARYTOPIC and OP's agenda to use WP:RM/TR as a backdoor to get this move done by all means is a no no. Thank you Synoman Barris for catching this one. —Nnadigoodluck 11:53, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Just the kind of conduct I expect from OP to be honest. GiantSnowman 11:54, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Go f*** yourself. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 14:00, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
I have asked you multiple times to please stop pinging me. If you do it again I shall raise that - and your un-CIVIL behaviour - at ANI. GiantSnowman 14:07, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Take it to ANI, I do not care. You have been constantly uncivil since I first had the misfortune of interacting with you. Wikipedia defines both condescension and appearing to ridicule another editor's comment as uncivil. You have done both in this thread alone. In fact, I will take it there myself. Position

The Chelsea official profile mentions he has played as a midfielder (and also a striker), but his primary position is defender, as it clearly states. GiantSnowman 17:15, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

He has played more minutes in his career in his preferred central midfield role. It's his best position and he himself favours it. He is capable at both right back and central/defensive midfield. The fact he has regularly played in both positions means it should be on his profile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tommy wafc (talkcontribs) 18:45, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Where are the sources confirming this? Why does Chelsea describe him as a defender? Why does the Football Association describe him as a defender? Why does the Premier League describe him as a right back? Why does BBC describe him as a full back? Why does BBC describe him as a defender? I could go on... GiantSnowman 19:02, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

The sources are his appearances! He has played the majority of his career games at the club I support as a central midfielder, it is his best position. The article you posted clearly stated he plays both right back and central midfield. You used Wayne Rooney as an example a player can only have one position, yet Rooneys page says forward and midfielder! I do not understand why you would remove a position a player has played most of his career in. He is capable of playing both positions, so list both positions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tommy wafc (talkcontribs) 12:05, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

No, Wikipedia relies on reliable sources, not fans watching games. GiantSnowman 16:30, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Reece James stats

Wikipedia should update Reece James stats. Since his red card at anfield, he's scored more than 5 goals Again he's considered amongst the best right backs in premier league 154.157.81.28 (talk) 19:09, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
