Reeding to prevent clipping[edit]

I have removed the section. It was marked as reference needed. One editor put in a link to a forum and noted the reference was not a good one; he was correct. The reference included one mention of a thing called a "security edge" to prevent duplication/forgery as distinct from a thing called a reeded edge. It did not address reeding against clipping.

The idea of reeding to prevent clipping is pointless as anyone who has a tool hard enough to clip metal off a coin has a tool hard enough to restore a reeded edge. Reeding to prevent clipping must be considered folklore until a reliable source is produced. Waerloeg (talk) 09:25, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What the previous editor actually said was "Not a particularly reliable source, but intelligent commentary, with a good illustration." Which, in my opinion, discounts the commentary of obviously serious coin collectors who are likely to have consulted the literature and have the opportunity challenging outlandish statements. I have at least one book that states that reeding was done as a security measure, replacing lettered edging in 1836, in the United States. It's a somewhat bare statement of the fact, without a lot of supporting information, but I propose to use it to support the restored section (with modifications, such as a less denigrating appraisal of the collectors' forum as a source), if there is consensus to do so, and if no one suggests a better source. Try cutting a milled edge into a coin. It (particularly with 17th century equipment) is very difficult. The mints that did so(Thomas Levenson (2010). Newton and the Counterfeiter. Faber & Faber. ISBN 057122993X.) required the development of highly specialised machines to do so. And this was "milling", not "reeding". Andy Dingley (talk) 20:07, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
